Hi all,

Apologies because some of this has been talked to death, but I haven't been able to find my specific query!

So, it's coming up on time for me to change my tyres and I'm trying to decide whether it's better to change them (in the time honoured fashion), or to change the whole wheels (as has been recommended on here previously).

I've got bog standard 17" LR alloys (see pics below), with Kumho Solus 235/65 17 tyres fitted. Wheels are well used with a few chips, kurbs, bubbles, scratches etc (see pics below). Tyres have between 2-4mm of tread left (again, see pics - the worst is just legal, whist the others are around 4mm). Obviously, I'll make sure they're properly cleaned up (all black removed) before trying to sell them!

So the question is, is it worth selling them? How do I do it? And how much are they worth?

Looking on eBay, they sell for between £200-350 as a set. Although some haven't sold, which is a worry (presumably because they're the bog standard wheels?). Might there be a market for them on the forum? Presumably at a lower price (in my experience, informed forum users are more discerning that the average eBayer).

What about selling them individually? They seem to sell as singles for around £100-150 per wheel. Perhaps people are using them to replace the steel spare? I wouldn't have any major objection to selling one per month if they realised more money.

Finally then, a new set of tyres will likely cost around £450, whereas a new set of wheels will be around £700, so it all seems to come down to the selling of the old ones! For info, I've specifically looked at newish 18" freelander/evoke wheels - not arsed about style really.

Any thoughts?

they are xs alloys not quite bog standard,
I had those and replaced with possibly the best wheels available for fl2. here they are in their 18"glory, not too much tyre wall but not bling low profile nonsense



Your olds may sell to someone with a 16" wheeled 'S' as the 16 tyres are allegedly hard to find. or you could pop some winter tyres on them and keep

I have just had a scout around on eBay prices have gone through the roof, people must be skint after the retail festival.
To give you an idea I bought four of these eBay link to wheelswith brand new Pirelli Scorpion tyres for £500 two months back, usually better to buy 4 wheels with tyres and flog the old ones, obviouslt timing is key.

The ones CG has are a little iffy and don't do the car any justice, Evoque wheels will fit so do a search for those too

Skinny wheels are better for snow anyway are they not, let them be eaten by the ravages of winter salt and it saves my delightful and expensive 19" wheels for the summer when they can be appreciated in all there polished glory.

Nonsense, the wheels are wheels, it's the tyres which have higher sidewalls and I'm running Nokian 235/60 R18 on them, ample sidewall and 'snow claws' although the latter have been barely tested yet

d.e.hill...go for it, there are plenty of those around and they look decent enough, the factory fir Pirelli Scorpion are a goo tyre too, nice and quiet.

I would stick with the 17" wheels and put some General Grabber GT tyres on it.

Having the alloys smartened up won't cost much per wheel either

I have the same wheels as yours on my XS, and I've said since day one that I don;t like them at all. They're a nice enough design but the huge section in the middle makes the wheel look very heavy and cheap... not too sure why LR didn't continue the cut out like they did on the other sections

I'm aiming for some HSE or Evoke wheels in 18" next, but these will be kept and powder coated black for the winter

I will go ahead and agree with Taz on keeping them for winters.. I put winter tyres on a set of 18s over here, and the single largest problem I had with them was that when I drove in deep snow, it would freeze to the alloy, then as soon as I got out onto a road with a bit of speed, it would be a jellyfest of unbalanced wheels.. requiring me at all times to carry a stick in the boot to clear them.

Really good winter tyres are expensive in the larger sizes, I tend to have lower expectations of summer performance tyre, and prioritize a performance winter tyre instead - So I dont mind having larger rims in the summer and be a little tighter with my budget.
