Presumably when you unscrew this it shouldn't look like this? Is there a technique I am missing? Any suggestions on my next move?

I got the remainder of the cap out with a pair of pliers, there was just enough room and flex to get a serrated edge under the lip and go around the cap body easing it out. I thought the 4 prongs you can see embedded in the cap had sheared off the body but that doesn't appear to be the case, looks like it just relies on it being a tight fit. Unfortunately when the rubber seals on the body are a tighter fit it doesn't work and the cap part just levers itself off of the body. What a POS design?

Yes, just to be clear this is what it should look like.

I, from time to time, unscrew the water cap and wipe the oil dipstick on those o-rings. Then I screw the cap back in. Works very easy every time when I want to unscrew.

Did you work out why the coolant seemed to be at 2 levels? Strange... |

Not yet, I haven't driven it or looked at it again since topping up. Especially strange as its parked facing slightly downhill, i.e. towards the Min marker.

Drove and re-checked. The MAX level has come down a bit and the MIN has risen a bit. The MIN still looks slightly lower, but it could be an optical illusion, its awkward to look at square on. Maybe those sections are compartmentalised somehow?
