Fraser Island

Hi

What sort of tyre pressures would you Queenslanders run on Fraser Island.

seems like a cool place
"Fraser Island is strictly four-wheel-driving territory. Seventy-Five Mile Beach is an actual highway that runs up the surf side of the island. Four-wheel-drives share the highway with Air Fraser planes making joy flights. Sand tracks cross the island linking lakes and rainforests.

Driving conditions vary with weather and tides. Speed limits are 35kmh on inland roads and 80kmh on the Seventy-Five Mile Beach. Normal road rules apply. Carry essential spares as well as a towrope, spade, water and first aid kit.

On the beach drive around the low tide times. Indicate when overtaking, turning or passing and pass on the left. Slow down for pedestrians, wildlife, vehicles and aircraft and beware of humps and creek washouts on the beach." At work

Just like Scarborough then. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

17" wheels or 18's?

I would say about 16PSi on the 17's you may need to go down to 15PSi on the 18's. Don't forget at those pressures you cant go pulling donuts in the sand Laughing .

Some might say that is a bit low, but it will make life real easy especially in the soft stuff. Watch out for the high centred tracks, shouldn't be too much of an issue as most 'real' 4WD's don't have any more clearance under the front than a freelander, so the tracks will be pre 'dozed' for you.

Sand mode turned on works well but I find it revs too hard, I always use command shift in sand mode, low revs in 2nd will see you easily crawl over the softest sand without digging in. more power = wheelspin = bogged.

That's my 2c. Anyone else care to chime in?

Not a Qlder, but; 15psi, TR sand mode, DSC off and it'll go nicely. Don't let the wheels spin, not much clearance before you're bellied out. --

Well, we're back from Fraser Is. It was a great trip. Never had a moment's trouble and never looked like getting bogged, either inland, on the beaches or going through Indian head.

I ran tyre pressures of 18 psi on the front and 20 psi on the rear. Fuel consumption on the beach was about 10.5 l/100km and on the inland tracks was about 17.2l/100km. I had a Rhino rack on top and was reasonably loaded.

A rock was just exposed in the track around Indian Head. A Troopy had broken an axle on it and the 4WD just ahead of me hit it also. No great damage to the 4WD but it was a blessing for me as it might have been nasty if I had hit it.

Before I bought the FL2 I read the forum messages and was concerned, but the car has performed up to my high expectations.

Thanks for the tips fellas.

Robert

Oh I meant to add that Sievester's photo shows Fraser Is like it is. The similarity to Scarborough, (where Mrs G and I stayed one night) is obvious.
