Not sure how authentic the test is? Could it be that the CRV is the 2WD version?

When thinking of moving the subaru on
I test drove a brand new model top spec CRV
it was without exaggeration the worst car I have driven
this includes holiday hire cars!
gutless thirsty and far more suited to 70-80 year olds who wan to potter about.
the salesman was raving how good they are,
we left totally underwhelmed.
I persevered with the Forester for a bit longer then traded it in for the XS I had
kept that 9 weeks realised I should have got an Auto
wanted an HSE,
So traded the XS in and got what I really wanted
from when I went out to look at freelanders and got the Subaru

In real conditions, regardless of the surface, there is a certain amount of friction always available for both front and rear wheels. The AWD system benefits therefore torque between front and rear wheels in order to achieve optimal driving force.
In the roll test non-existent grip is simulated in the front and maximum grip at the rear.
If all the available torque required to move the vehicle forward would be transferred to the rear differential then the limit for the torque of the unit would be exceeded.
If the vehicle continues to run in this state (the front wheels spinning and the rear wheels standing still) the system senses the high speed variation and that the differential clutch slips and reduces the available torque to the rear wheels to prevent overheating. That is why the vehicle moves backward in the video.
In real conditions a scenario like the roll test with such a high difference in grip between the front and the rear wheels is highly unlikely.
In summary, our car is crap as stated by Aero some months ago and you would be an idiot to buy one.

once again cost and efficiency have gotten in the way of the whole point of having 4WD

We gave it 4WD, but such a tiny diff that it can't actually handle any power - so the computer shuts it down the second it's actually needed

So, if you were doing a 3 point turn and decided to put the front wheels on to a slippery verge, possibly relying on the rear wheels to be on the road surface with greater grip, it may not get you off. How useless would that be?

Have to say, a colleague has a Honda 4x4 and from a distance you can see the rear driveshafts. They do look very thin and puny as if they aren't designed to carry much torque. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

Must say in fairness I had a CRV 3 - 4 years ago - had Wintrac tyres on her and actually handled pretty good in the snow and ice. One of the winters I had it we got clobbered with snow - had to get local farmer to dig out my drive which was 3 - 4 feet deep in snow ! CRV never gave me a problem driving twisty, hilly country roads in the white stuff ! Never lost traction at any point. Only problem I had was it not starting one morning cause the diesel fuel had frozen ! Freelander 2

Just to get some perspective on this thread, this doesn't look like an incapable car to me

Looks very capable and on all season tyres. Wonder what they were.
