Prospective owner

Hi, not sure if this is the right part of the forum, but wondered if anyone could offer a little buying advice. Am looking for a replacement car for my wife and the Freelander 2 seems to fit the bill. Have found a 2WD version (ed4) with good specification but it has 90k miles on it. One company owner.

I hear mixed things about FL2 reliability - should I be put off by the mileage? Obviously the price reflects this.

The FL2 is generally pretty good, reliability wise, and in the eD4 you won't have the rear diff or Haldex unit, both of which can cause the odd problem. If it's been reasonably well looked after there should be plenty of life left in it at 90K - some members have done twice that or more and still going strong.

Thanks for the replies.

It's from a dealer with 3 months p&l warranty. Presumably their own - with option to extend. It's a one-owner fully LR serviced. Not sure of the type of driving, but it's a 2011 so averages at 23k per year, suggesting some long distance travel.

if it suits budget and looks like its a good deal, have a independent vehicle check done on it, which will give you some assurance

Im not sure, but Dan@Duckworths might be able to bring up its history for warranty claims up, but been LR serviced it might well be upto date with recalls and be tip top condition, no one can be certain though and it might be worth having a warranty in place, one that you choose and know whats covered

Yes, this is the car. I viewed it but have not yet driven it.

I wonder if the seller knows it's 2WD - the description says 4WD, so you might be able to knock the price down a bit by bringing it to his attention!

I've lost track of prices, so I don't know whether that's a good price or not.

It also states 2WD so he's covering all bases.

If it were me I would get the Reg number and try to find out the service history, what has it had done and when, Clutch and DMF would be my worry, might have been done recently Idea
But if you get that far down the road that your doing a Test Drive, check the Clutch for slippage at speed, not when stationary, also listen for bearing failure.
Warranty that's with it might not be worth a carrot, check it, some have been on here and then found that the warranty only covers engine and gearbox.

Just a thought but in the photos the outside temperature is reading 23C so it must have been on the forecourt since the summer. If so they might be keen to move it on and open to a haggle.

I see it has a tow bar, the reversing sensors may have been configured off, I think you have to have reactivation done by a dealer if you want to remove the tow bar and want them working.

I sold an 08 reg Freelander with 99k miles to a dealer last march and he has still got it on the forecourt. They recently reduced the asking price and it's now only £550 more than he gave me for it. Add in a service, MOT, vat and a warranty and he is making a loss on that one.

Seats look tidy for that amount of miles, I would expect the bolster sides to have wrinkled a bit more, but still check the side of the seat for cracking in the pleather Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Great spot of the 23 degrees. When I looked at it last weekend the remote control keys would ot work - they needed charging in the ignition (I think they don't have batteries). This suggests they've not been used for a while, so maybe it's been on the forecourt for a few months. As said above, maybe the seller will be keen to move it on.
