Clutch Slave Cylinder problems

Hi guys,

A couple of months ago, the clutch gave out. The pedal intermittently stopped coming back up and eventually stuck at the bottom of the foot well. I didn't notice any fluid dripping from the car or any puddles where it is parked.

The garage that took it, replaced the slave cylinder and installed a new clutch kit and flywheel, but struggled with it for 3 months, wherein the slave cylinder would fail every time after an intermittent test period. Finally they managed to get hold of a clutch kit from a neighboring country and the vehicle was fine for about 4 weeks.

While driving on the motorway the clutch pedal just dropped and I was stuck in 4th. I phoned up the garage to inform them that the problem returned. After a week, they say that for some reason the auto adjust on the clutch does not reset, causing the slave cylinder to blow a seal. They've had an expert look at it, and he recommends that they place a spacer between the bell housing and the clutch(?) which will force the auto adjuster to 'kick back in'.

Has anyone had or heard of something similar? How can a vehicle that was running fine since 2007 suddenly require spacers and other adjustments to make replacement parts work?

Sounds odd - just had my clutch fixed yesterday - hope it's not recurring too... http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic21487.html

Does anyone perhaps have the technical specs for the clutch assembly handy?

I don't have the specs but this is what the slave looks like, this came put of a vehicle 3.5 years old with 50k miles. The slave was OK but changed anyway. The bearing surface is a proper ball bearing supported device. There is no adjustment except that the piston moves out quite a long way to take up the slack as the pressure plate fingers move.

Note that it says FoMoCo Ford Motor Company on it. I wonder what other vehicles this fits.

That's great, but I'm actually looking for the technical specs of the clutch. The local official Land Rover garage claims they don't have it and we want to check that the replacement part measures up.

An update: It looks like the clutch malfunctioned to such an extent that it damaged the flywheel and both now needs replacement, on top of the blown/popped slave cylinder. This will be the 4th clutch kit in as many months. Big Cry

I hear the the Disco 3's second hand prices have come down quite a bit...
