I've had my steering wheel on and off a few times over the last few weeks ... used a home made tool.
If you say what problems you're experiencing then it would be easier to try and help you. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

I made a homemade tool as well but I could not I thought get enough purchase to pull the spring forward so bought the powerful version but however much I pull with also pushing on the airbag do not seem to be able to dislodge it.

I would guess the problem you have it actually latching onto the release mechanism. I think you'll find your trying to catch on in the wrong place or wrong depth. Try putting the hook in straight and to the hilt, then move it about a bit, that should do it.

I remember having problems once and I could have sworn I did no different on previous occasions, anyway I went deeper and it latched on. Think I'd been about 5mm short and trying to catch onto adjoining plastics. Rolling Eyes

Here's a video [a little more detailed than Powerful's current one] ok it applies to a D3, but same idea.

Points to note:
When putting the tool in there are guides on the inside of the rear cowling - see them at 7.20 min on video.
That'll help guide the tool in.
Also, when tool is located, give a press on the airbag on the same side as you're pulling to dislodge.

Are you sure that the switch wires aren't fouling the tool insertion and possibly getting caught in the wiring - specifically prone to the newer style wheel.

Also, I assume you've disconnected everything and allowed the car to go to sleep before working on it? FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Thank you for your replies,in the past I managed it no problem on the disco but I am getting to the point were I will open the holes up on the side of the steering wheel with a core drill so I can see what I am doing,I can push on the spring legs but cannot seem to catch onto the bottom of the spring to pull on it.

A very good friend came round tonight and while I grunted he pulled on the springs and the airbag eventually came off, unfortunately the clock spring has the socket for the heated steering wheel plug but it has no pins in it so obviously will not work, this despite ringing up two land rover garages to be told that there is only one number for heated and non heated clock springs, anybody got one going cheap,or is there a way round it? Does anyone know if it is possible to populate the clock spring with the missing pins for the heated steering wheel,it appears to have a connecter on the back of the steering wheel with wiring in place so why they did not put the connections in the top is anybody's guess.
