Yes, different but HSA came in with EPB because otherwise you have no way to do a hill start. However, with FL2 (manual with HSA and EPB) on a low angle (?) slope, HSA does not operate anyway. LR prioritised design for auto trans. and didn't bother to change the angle at which it takes effect for manual version (that should have been something close to zero degree angle) IMHO. Freelander 2 2013 TD4 HSE

HSA or on the earlier Freelander 2 was Gradiant Release Control, which delayed the release of the brakes by a couple of seconds, no Hand Brake use required.

I believe there is no emergency release on FL2s and the rear callipers have to be wound off from underneath to release the brakes.

Does the Freelander 2 with EPB not use brake shoes in the hub then? ie it's a different hub/drum design?

No. The callipers are wound on with a motor. Each calliper has an electrical cable to it and no mechanical connection.

That sort of thing is great in theory but I spent some time working with the emergency services and you get inundated with all sorts of stuff like that plus Heath and Safety to the extent that you don't take it in.
The one big piece of advice I always remember though is that if you witness an accident (and are not involved) don't ever offer to let one of the injured people sit in your car. If they then start complaining of neck or back problems the Fire Brigade will cut the roof off your car to get them out ! It has happened and you have a hell of a job afterwards with your insurance company explaining why your car was written off when it wasn't involved in the accident.
