Having had two manual FL2s and two auto FL2s I can honestly say that I much prefer the effortless and enjoyable drive with the auto. 10 years ago I couldn't have imagined myself as saying that but obviously I'm not as stuck in my ways as I thought.

Now can't imagine getting a manual car again - I've have driven them since (hire cars etc)..what a faff!

Been auto now for 10+ years and would not contemplate going back to manual.

A easier driving style, in my opinion, makes for a better driver because it is one less thing that you have to think about when driving. Previous auto was a Tiguan and it convinced me that you could have an auto and 4x4.

Fuel consumption is higher but as others have said, it is worth it.

If I was buying a sports car I'd want a manual, but the FL2 suits auto  SD4 HSE Lux Orkney Grey,Full size spare tyre,Ugly kid glass.

Having had both, the Auto is far superior in every way. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I've mostly driven manual Freelanders, but had an auto courtesy car twice - once for 3 weeks when accident damage was being fixed.

I do have a fondness for manual, but the auto was a great drive. The only problem with the auto was I'd put it in drive and knock it across into sport mode. Every time. Great to drive, but fuel consumption nothing like claimed on this thread. Maybe because it was not my car and I was driving like I stole it, but I was getting mid 20's (similar to where I get in the Discovery manual!).

It's just too boring not driving in sport when you have the option.

I drive TD4 XS AUTO.
Had the loan car MANUAL MY14 TD4 XS i think over the weekend.

I think the manual gives better fuels economy ..and definitely better than command shift. You do have more feel and control with the manual i.e. you can go from 1st to 3rd or 2nd gear to 4th gear easily.

I'm used to Autos, so i really missed my Auto for 3 days even thought it's MY2011.

may think about an auto when I get too old to be bothered to drive, and just want to get from A to B as easily as possible.

the above comment is ignorant and at best ridiculous, I appreciate it is an opinion but why knock everyone who drives an auto.

suggest you drive one for a few months, if you haven't already, before you make such comments and respect others opinions.

I drive both manual and auto Freelanders on a regular basis. I'm equally happy driving either because it's a Freelander and in my opinion a very good vehicle both on and off road.

The auto vs manual debate on this Forum is a regular feature and there are almost as many examples of manual drivers mocking auto drivers as there auto drivers mocking manual drivers. Everyone has their own reasons for liking one gearbox over another and long may that continue.
