sound like a starter motor problem , the bendex or what engages the starter motor gearing to the flywheel is not returning and is locked in place. On other cars a tap on it with something used to clear, but if it is the starter motor then it needs replacing Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Basically you can't but a light tap might just free it Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Sounds like the problem I had on my old FL2. I did what realspeed said, just give the starter a tap and it fired up.
Then my auto electrician mate give the starter an overall and that sorted it.

Its at the front of the engine about half way down or just follow the red lead from the battery down to the starter.
