I've only ever compared a Range Rover sport on winter tyres against my Discovery 300tdi on BFG all terrains in deep snow, of at least 12" deep on a steep hill.

With centre diff locked my disco climbed the 40 degree slope without hassle whilst the range rover failed to get up withouth a tow.

In my opinion a decent set of narrow all terrains will more often than not get the better of wide set of winter tyres. Green Discovery 300tdi Modified,

And I've found that with winter tyres, braking in snow you struggle to get the ABS to kick in.

Looking at the long range weather forecast looks like middle week of November the temps will consistently be down below 7c for me, so probably around then.

tyres on Michelin alpines I think they will be ok

living in a ski resort at 1800m, winter tyres is a subject close to my heart. But I also go down to the med coast regularly where it can be 20 degrees + which is not so kind to full winters, especially with a bunch of hairpins en route. So for this winter I am trying a set of Vredstein quatrac 3s - officially m+s but also have the snow symbol and apparently beat some full winters in tests. Looks like a neat design with full 'winter' style tread on mid to inner tyre but with a harder traditional tread on the outer edges. I will report back next spring!

(PS also have an old FL1 on full winters for my wife to bounce about + 2 sets of good chains )

Won't put mine on until they forecast snow or lengthy spells below 7 degrees. Definitely not putting them on with temps above 11 degrees.

Didn't get around to switching to my summer tyres this year so my Vredstein's (17") are handily already locked and loaded now winter has arrived...

They were fine in the in the summer, although I did notice when I let the pressure drop down to 32PSI the ride felt off to me. Pumping them back up to 36PSI and felt good again (I've no idea if that is related to the season tho). Haven't monitored tread but assume I've paid a price for leaving them on?

Planning to plasti dip my 19" (with Verde all season), probably gun metal grey, over the winter and will be switching next spring  FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Fit them when you need to, or like many customers running Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme they run them all year round with no problems.  Andy.

Collected spare set of wheels from bay sale and got the tyres fitted on the way home yesterday in Monmouth. Mixed emotions as glad to get the Pirelli Scorpion tyres on but was happier with the way the darker wheels looked, may need to get that sorted in the new year.

I'm running winters for the 3rd year running and have sworn by them. However each year I long for some really rubbish weather to satisfy the purchase and this year looks to be another let down. 18 degrees today and only a chilly wind on the way
