Fuel light came on with half a tank.

Driving my FL last night when I heard a 'bong', fuel light came on, gauge dropped to the bottom and I got a message on the Satnav screen. I carried on driving as I knew I had half a tank left and the miles in tank indicator told me I had 191 miles left. When I came to stop at a set of lights ten minutes later, I quickly switched off then started again and all was good! So, was this a one-off glitch or a sign of a failing fuel tank sender or worse?

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

Had same problem with my 2011SD Auto when almost new, LR assist came to house confirmed faulty sensor, ordered part and organised courtesy car to be waiting at dealership following morning. New Discovery HSE waiting. This was a Monday morning and promised car ready for Wednesday. I made them fully aware that I was driving to Southampton on the Friday. Called Wednesday PM, told Thursday, called Thursday and told it would be ready to collect 10am Friday. Arrived with loaded Disco to find Fl2 on ramp minus rear diff, prop shafts and rear drive shafts, tank balanced onjack. Went on hholiday with Disco.
Collected FL onreturn all OK!!!!!! Stopped for fuel a couple of days later on way to Aberdeenshire, walked out shop to see fuel running down forecourt.
Back to dealers for 3 days.
Shortt time later vibration buzz noises then limp mode, heat shields and oxygen sensor damaged by removing diff etc, booked back in but called at friend garage to put car on ramp, found propshaft and diff flanges damaged by being hit with hammer or something heavy.
Service managers explanation, the whole system had to be removed as on new SD propshaft does not disconnect from diff.
I can not put in print my reply to such utter trash.
I do have a new FL2!!! All FL2's (3) Gone

Mine had the same problem this year. I had a software update that didn't solve the issue in my case (but it has fixed the issues on others FL2) I then had the wiring to the fuel senders replaced, this sorted the issue of the fuel gauge showing zero. There's a technical bulletin out about diesel corroding the wiring connectors in the fuel tank. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Hi Steve,
I had the same problem for years on mine MY07, at the end after driving a longer time with zero showing on fuel gauge, system started to reduce the power to the engine. Then, I got concerned about the problem.

Go through the post:
https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic17063.html?highlight=fuel+gauge

And, definitelly give a try with what help mine, and that was simply playing with the connector, under the backseet is one big rubber circle, which you remove, and under there is the pump with the connector on top, remove it, put it back few times, put some conntact spray on it.
All described in bulletin:
https://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/user...el_ssm.pdf

Good luck!
V

Thanks Struchnjak. I'll certainly give that a try. For what its worth, it hasnt done it again so hopefully it was just a bad connection but I'll check and clean them to be on the safe side. Thumbs Up

Maybe a reason for putting 2SO in the fuel? ...and generally keeping the tank sender unit lubricated. John

My senders were fine, just the wiring connectors. I don't know if 2 stroke would make any difference. The mechanic show me the technical bullitin and it covered a few models, not just the FL2 Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
