Just wondering on people's thoughts....

I just wait for it to get cold - which even in the Pennines it's not yet. Probably another week or two at least I would think.

Wife on Jury service next week so car available , winter tyres on sometime in the week .

Usually the end of this month but looking like a bit later this year, but then I take mine off usually the end of March but last winter it was the middle of February.

It would normally be another week or two for me, but a couple of punctures have conspired to mean I will be getting a set of winters on next week. Currently a FL1 owner.

Did it last week - simply because I had a spare half-hour, and I knew it was going to be at least another 3 weekends before I got another opportunity.

Probably a bit early, but at least it's done.

Bit of a newb question, but do you folks have a different set of alloys or just literally get the tyres swapped? Without going into the whole winter tyre debate, I'm wondering whether to change my wranglers early for the grip depth or maybe invest in some winters/rims.

I have a second set of identical alloys.

One set is pretty ropey with some lacquer peel and scuffs - I use these with the winter tyres, so I'm less precious about salt on the roads and the general crud that goes along with winter.

I'm considering plastidipping this set when they come off in the spring as a bit of an experiment.

The second, much nicer set, have my summer tyres fitted.

I have been pondering the winter tyre option this year.
My previous car had Pirelli Scorpion Zero fitted, they proved excellent in snow and ice for me, this car has Continental tyres fitted, so far not impressed and I suspect being a summer tyre they will be awful when the temperature drops.
Second hand winter tyres are to be avoided, the tread depth matters and while 4-5mm looks good on a photo, in reality it's not very good and a waste of money.
I may see how these really do stack up this year but my next set will be Pirelli most likely, the scorpion Verde are a good price and 'all season' rated.

Ahh ok, sounds fair enough. This will be the first tyre change i've needed to do on the Landy, whilst they are not at the limit, approx 3-4mm, would it be fair to say best to change before winter? Or would a Wrangler still cope adequately? 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

Winters on a Land Rover

We've never ran any of our LR's on winters and the weather is a lot tougher up here

It's a little bit more than just having traction to move, you also need it to stop, doesn't matter it its a Land Rover or not, you cannot defy the laws of physics.

Put mine on yesterday - thought I'd do it before it gets too cold to work outside. I'm lucky to have the space to store a spare set of wheels, so I keep the Wintracs on an old set of 17" wheels. As I've written elsewhere, Wrangler M+S are fine in deep snow - at least when fairly new - but I was amazed at the agility of ordinary cars and vans on winter tyres in the same conditions, so got myself the winter tyres. Stopping distance and all round performance will be better at temperatures below 7C. Plenty of sets of wheels seem to come up on here and on e-bay if you keep a look out. Price is usually quite good if the tyres are worn out - alternatively buy a set with good tyres and put winters on your old rims.
I don't keep a separate winter spare - it's not illegal to run a normal tyre alongside winters, so I reckon for the short distance and unlikelihood of a puncture (never yet had to use a spare on a Freelander) one of the ordinary wheels is fine. Got my Wintracs from AJS site sponsor.
