Hi everybody,
After 10 days with my new LR2 HSE i6 I must say I still believe it's a great car. I have 1000km on the clock and no problems so far. My only complain is that the wiring in the front windscreen (for heating the windscreen) is a bit annoying especially at night when I have opposite comming cars. My windscreen has plenty of jerky very thin wires comming down in parallel (it's part of the winter pack). Does anyone else have the same problem? how do you cope with this? Any remedies or suggestions? How did Land Rover not notice this?

defkalion, I'm afraid you will have to live with it. There are mainly 2 types of heated windscreens: the first one has a transparent metallic coating , the other electric filaments. Land Rover builds in the latter type and under certain light circumstances, those wires are nor really "unvisible".

I have the winter pack too.... To be honest, the thin zig, zags don't bother me.

You will get used to it and soon won't even notice them!

David they don't bother you even you have lights from the opposite direction ? I certainly hope I'm gonna get used to it.

I stand to be corrected but Ford patented this idea and so have the licence to sell it and use it in their cars, hence why we all (some of us) have it. I think the Mondeo was the first car to have it about 10 years ago??
I to found it a bit distracting at first as your eyes are drawn to it like a moth to a light bulb. You need a few more miles under your belt fella, then you wont see it, bit like not noticing how tubby your missus really is, you see past the fat!! (not suggesting your missis is tubby that is!!)

You are correct Ford did indeed pantent the heated front windscreen, it a lot older than 10yrs though I had it on my 1988 Ford Escort XR3i - ahhh they were the days!

Stu I stand corrected Sir!! Yes indeed I remember now...learnt to drive in the XR3i, it was £9 for an hour in an Escort popular or £11 for the XR3i it was worth the extra 2 quid I can tell you also had the Lucas ABS system which was first production car ABS system as an extra cost, them were the days thanks for reminding me

How much does it cost to replace a heated windscreen? What about rock chips? Would a nasty chip cause the screen to stop working? I don't know if rock chips are a problem in the UK but they certainly are in Canada. (That and moose collisions )

Most insurance companies in the UK have a minimal windscreen excess - (mine is 25 GBP), therefore the cost of the heated windscreen really doesn't matter as I will only pay 25 GBP for a new one - and this doesn't count as a claim on my insurance either - is this the same in Canada?

Unless things have changed recently, it is quite costly to insure a windscreen in Canada. It was on the order of $100-200/year for the additional insurance and there was a $150 deductable on top of that. And that was for a $200 windscreen. As you might imagine, I never get windscreen insurance. This might change, though, if a replacement is $1500 (hence my original question).

I'll call my insurance provider today to find out for sure.

Well, very nearly 3 weeks into my ownership, and I need a new windscreen !!! 3 stone chips within the drivers field of vision caused by a passing van flicking something up from the road.

I'm hoping that the process of replacing doesn't mess anything else up!!

And I wasn't even driving - SWMBO was! I've not seen the damage yet, but I'm assured the stone didn't hit any bodywork. Fingers crossed.

Defkalion Hi,

it's exactly the same thing (thin wires that then to annoy new owners for the first few days of use) on older Land Rovers with the heated windscreen option.

I had a RaRo P38A (4.6 HSE to be exact) with this option, and had a heated windscreen from a RaRo Classic fitted on one of my Camels (a 1993 evented one) when the original windscreen had been damaged during the selections of the Greek 1997 CT team.

You will get used to the thin wires after some time and your eyes will not focus there but on the oncoming traffic. If they don't then you will definately have no more problems with it, or any other problem in general. The oncoming traffic will take care of it (a terrible exhibition of black humour..... sorry for that but I could not resist it. Hope you will not be bothered with a bit of twisted teasing)

Seriously now. When the weather will finally get much colder you will appreciate the advantages of a heated windscreen. Eventhough here in Greece the A/C is more than capable of demisting the internal side of the windscreen during very cold and dump days and it is EXTREMELY rare to have ice forming on the windscreen, especially where we both live.

BTW does the winter package option also include heated seats? If yes then THIS is a VERY cozy option.

I am particularly interested in the cost of a replacement screen. It costs me $150/year to add windscreen coverage and there is a deductable charge on top of that if I ever use it. boiledgnat, can you find out how much the replacement would have cost if you paid out of pocket. The dealers here in Canada don't have a reliable price yet as the vehicle has only been on the market for a couple of weeks.
