Starting sleeping car

Hi all
Been away for three weeks , car is sleeping, son was meant to start it while I was away!
Got in using key on passenger door , but it doesn't come to life when I put the fob in, in fact the fob won't even stay in
How do I get it started?

Thanks

Andy

Just putting the fob in should have done it. I would try the following - 1. Try the other fob (assuming you have another, and haven't already tried it). 2. Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then reconnect and try again. 3. Charge up the battery, or try another battery or a jump start - 3 weeks is fairly short to enter sleep mode, so you may have a problem with your battery.

Is the battery flat? If so charge it! Still typing when Pab answered!

It was a new battery last November, it's definitely flat , must be a drain somewhere , could be tom tom fitted as per mods on here.
Son did try to start it but was already flat after about a week,.he was confused because it woudnt take the fob.
Ideas on how to test for a drain?

Andy

My test for checking for a drain is to measure the current directly with a multimeter (on amps setting).

This is not as straight forward as it first seems as the re-connection of a battery through the leads can cause the multimeter fuse to blow. How I would go about it to avoid completely disconnecting the battery is as follows:

1. Connect one meter lead to a good chassis point
2. Hold the other side FIRMLY on to the battery negative terminal (easier getting someone to help)
3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal without disconnecting the meter lead in step 2.
4. Your meter is now measuring the complete drain on the battery so don't try cranking the engine or the meter fuse will blow instantly.

This will show up any significant drain on the battery. I don't know what the normal drain current would be but I would expect a battery to last at least 4 weeks. This equals 672 hours, which on a 75ah battery is around 0.1 amp for it to discharge in that time. I would be alarmed if I saw anything larger than this on a car that has been turned off for more than 10 minutes.

If you do get a high current, try removing all the car fuses until the current reduces.

Iain

I wouldn't disconnect the battery in an Airport Car Park, no alarm, doors not deadlocked. Would just make sure I had good access to the passenger door.

Thanks, would it be better to get someone to start it for a few minutes?

2007 Freelanders sometimes drain battery for no obvious reason. There are a few (old) threads about this. It is quite likely a one-off and you'll be fine next time. (Alleged) causes include not double-locking, using the tailgate button on key and not double locking afterwards (I think that was my problem), leaving lights or wipers on auto, continuing a phone call on Bluetooth after switching off. Shouldn't be satnav if you have programmed it to switch off with ignition and/or fed it off an ignition-sensitive fuse. Another frequent cause is after-market radios.
As suggested above, make sure you have access to n/s door and have a rescue plan in force just in case.
But I suspect you'll be OK. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Charged battery up overnight , reconnected and all ok, had to reset sat nav to get that going but otherwise all back to normal,
Will test for a drain over the weekend .

Surprised you didn't have to reset the windows. If you've fitted the TomTom satnav they do sometimes run down their internal battery and need restarting with the button on the back. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

If you've disconnected the battery you will probably have to reset the windows. Details of how to do it are in the handbook. Should not affect anything else, although it will also have reset the trip computer to zero.
When leaving it at airport suggest you double check the things I mentioned above: turn off auto lights and wipers, and be sure to double lock. The satnav should not cause any problem if set to turn off with ignition.
One extra thought - check your rear wiper is parking correctly. It is possible for them to jam and remain live. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
