United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Stornoway Grey
Apple Carplay (SPH-DA120)

Hello!

New here, but picking up my '09 Freelander next Weds!

Anyway, already thinking about sticking a carplay head unit in, but hoping to get a bit of advice...

Looking at a Pioneer SPH-DA120 (available at Halfords for £350). However, I've never fitted an aftermarket unit before so not entirely sure what I need (other than the head unit itself obviously, and a USB-Lighting cable for connecting my iPhone...).

I presume I need a double DIN fascia kit for a Freelander, but do I need a cage or extra cables/adapters or anything? My (soon to be be) freelander has built in bluetooth, steering wheel controls and parking sensors; will these still work with the new head unit? Is there anything special I require?

These are what I'm looking at but not sure what I need:
fleabay - with cage

fleabay - without cage

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Cheers

bluetooth, parking sensors and run through the radio, so i don't believe they will

i recall a thread where the person hid the head unit to allow functionality

think this was it, but might help somewhat

I'm looking at the Appradio 4 as well.

Search on eBay and you'll find kits for about £75 that contain a double din fascia, cage and Pioneer steering control module (you plug the Freel2 steering controls into it, then the module plugs in the back of the Appradio).

As above, the reverse sensors will not work but again you can get a module to plug into the sensor cables which will allow them to work again. Search for can bus reverse sensor module.

The only thing left that won't work is the clock on the dashboard as it gets its signal from the factory radio. No loss.

Appradio has its own bluetooth so that's all good.

One thing to be aware of is that replacing the head unit is only straight forward with the lower-end audio systems - the high line systems are fibre optic and a bit more tricky (and expensive) to do.

The last thing I need to check is what happens to the factory subwoofer when you replace the head unit..

Here's mine fitted using incartec fascia, cage and wiring loom with PDC so my rear sensors still work. Steering wheel controls work too.

Have wired the lightning cable from the back of the radio through the air vent so that CarPlay works.

Roughly costs were: -

Pioneer SPH-DA120 - £344.99
http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audio/car-...le-carplay

InCarTec Wiring Loom (to retain PDC) - £99.99
InCarTec Pioneer Patch Lead (to retain steering wheel control) - £9.99
InCarTec Double DIN Cage Kit - £39.99
InCarTec Aerial Adaptor - £9.99
http://incartec.co.uk/landrover/1789/1034/2056/radio/Browser.aspx

In addition I've added a reverse camera to replace my boot handle
http://www.amazon.co.uk/WMicroUK-Waterproo...ing+Sensor

Think that covers everything I user other than the vent phone holder and Lightning cable.

Oooooohhhh! This complicates things. I was quite happy knowing I couldn't replace my unit without losing the sensors. Now I'm back to wanting to put a new one in! Still works out quite costly though.

When you say it is easy to do on the low end ones, I'm never sure which is which. I have an Alpine non nav one with Bluetooth and not the max number of speakers. Is that low end?
