Driving Abroad

Hi,
Off to Germany next week, first time driving abroad for 20 years plus!

Any information regarding legal requirements gratefully received. Like for instance do we need headlamp converters, bulb kit, warning triangles, hi-vis jackets, so much confusing information is out there!

Please help us to stay legal, thanks! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Have a look at this site:

http://driving.drive-alive.co.uk/driving-in-germany.htm

From memory:
Headlamp converters - required
Bulb Kit - recommended
warning traingle - required
first aid kit - required
winter tyres - technically needed in wintery conditions but you might get away with All Season tyres as fitted as standard.
High vis jackets - recommended and required if you're going through France at any stage.

If you are driving through France you must have a hi viz jacket for each person in the car , the jackets must be within the car and in easy reach. You also need a triangle. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

You do need headlamp converters and a warning triangle and, depending on which countries you are travelling through, hi-vis vests.
Things to remember in Germany itself:
On the Autobahn, the guy coming up behind you may be doing over 150mph and he expects you to get out of his way. Tailgating like you've never seen, at very high speeds, is common. Luckily, traffic nowadays tends to be too heavy for much speeding. German drivers tend to get a bit excited on the roads leading to Germany, so watch out for similar behaviour in neighbouring countries. General motorway traffic seems to flow at about 90mph (140kph). Also watch out for trucks pulling out to overtake. Service stations: most have a ticket system for the toilets. You put 70c in the slot and take a ticket. You can cash the ticket in for 50c in the café. English is generally spoken. Watch out for trucks in the car parking areas.
In towns: pretty much standard but note the following:
when turning at traffic lights, pedestrians and cyclists to your left or right have right of way - you have a green light, but so do they. The same applies when turning into driveways, supermarket car parks etc; you don't have to stop at zebra crossings but you must give way;
traffic lights may be switched off. If so, obey the road sign attached to them (red and white triangle = give way, yellow diamond = you have right of way). The same symbols may be used to indicate that you have right of way round a corner (the sign is difficult to describe but obvious); generally speaking side roads give way to main roads and there is a road marking to indicate this as well as signs.
Some big towns have low emission zones. You are supposed to register your car and get a sticker. Haven't done this so can't advise, but I suspect a show of ignorance will get you off.
Note that towns do not have speed limit signs - the yellow town sign indicates the speed limit (60kph from memory - approx. 30mph). There is a crossed-out town sign as you leave, denoting end of speed limit.
If walking in towns, the green/red man at crossings are mandatory. It's illegal to cross on a red light. While you probably won't get caught, there's a safety issue, as a German seeing you crossing will assume the light is green and may walk into traffic (I've seen it happen).
Have fun - I got my Freelie up to 130mph at one point, but I think you'll find 90-100 is a reasonable cruising speed! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

Also if you are going through France you are by law supposed to have a couple of breathalyser kits in the car. However, you won't be fined if you don't have them. Don't be tempted to speed on French motorways unless you carry a wad of cash and don't mind spending it - on the spot fines are common! John
