Computer strange event

Was formatting a DVD disc in my pc today and the DVD drive stopped.
The device manager didn't find CD/DVD drive and I couldn't find the drivers either. Couldn't download them anyway as the hardware had vanished.
So after an hour of faffing about and restarting, I gave up and assumed the CD/DVD was kaput despite very little use.
Switched the pc on an hour later and the whole lot reappeared and functioned perfectly.

Anyone got a clue as to what happened? Has the thing gone into sleep mode due to temperature perhaps? Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Lost all the contacts from my phone Saturday night, switched it off then on again and everything back to normal, Rebooting is a wonderful thing.
Sometimes these devices have a mind of their own, just have to show them who is the boss. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

this has happened to me occassionally.

The fix is switch off the computer - remove (unplug) the cd/dvd drive- run computer- turn off computer-reconnect cd/dvd drive and it will come back. Or at least it does for me as the computer sees it as a new hardware item

PS sometimes it may only show cd and not the dvd as well fix is same as above
Out of interest I purchased a Plextor CD/DVD drive for silent running as well as silent running cooling fans. My computer is about 18 inches from me and I can't hear any noise from it at all.
Drive "c" is an SSD card so no moving parts there either Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Agree... it's usually some glitch in the OS that 'loses' a device and a restart usually fixes it.
Might have been triggered by a momentary hardware ghlitch - poor connector contact (try reseating if poss), or by a bug in OS or driver (updates available?) ...

Desktop Win 7.

Tried several reboots to no avail. The disc I was trying to format refused to do so and was stuck in the drive for quite some time.
As the drive is built into the tower, easy disconnect isn't possible.
All is fine with it today. I still think it could be temperature related as the drive was spinning for a good hour before it gave up the ghost.
Once it had cooled down, it all re-appeared.

Also yesterday, my oil monitor stopped working. The transmitter is mounted on the tank inside the lid as was dry as a bone. Took it apart, no signs of water/condensation, fitted a new battery, still nothing.
Some 10 hours later and at a similar time to my DVD drive re-appearing, I noticed it was working again and has been fine ever since.

Don't like things that seemingly fix themselves because they don't.

Certainly a temp dependent problem is possible. I imagine the optical drive connects to a SATA port on the motherboard so perhaps shifting to a different SATA port may bypass the problem?

Can't comment on your ghost infestation Laughing ...
