french tax protest

English farmers may moan about the weather caravans etc
but the French at-least act on their grievances

I don't know if the UK chicken farmers currently have a grievance but the dairy farmers are getting restless and with good cause. However, their target should be the supermarkets who seem to have quickly forgotten their promise to pay a fair price for milk. Retail at £1 for four pints isn't commercial sense for anyone. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

I have driven through Morlaix - IMHO the farmers have done thousands of pounds worth of improvements! John

It looks like things are kicking off in Shropshire - again; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-29516172

It seems the Germans are being beastly to the farmers; "Muller UK & Ireland Group chief executive Ronald Kers branded the group "militants" and said blockades could damage the dairy industry." If he wants to see militant farmers he should go to France. Low prices will do more damage to the industry than protesting farmers.

At least Arla is a cooperative even if it is Swedish. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

Well I know a few poor ones.
My brother in law has a dairy farm and is making a loss on every litre. In order to increase efficiency he bought more cows and took out loans to install robotic milkers as he can't afford to pay staff to do the milking 24/7. The problem is that when milk prices go down you can't tell the cows to stop making the stuff. He is basically running to stand still.
My other brother in law only gets by by running a few fields as a camp site which brings in more money than the farm does.
I know of a large potato grower who went bust last year after the previous wet summer.

The problem is that if you own your own farm you are asset rich but income poor. If you are a tenant then you are more income poor. The only guys who make decent money are the big arable farmers in the east who plant thousands of acres of crops and hope that the weather is kind to them.

That's because they're all too busy to get out much! You have to milk cows twice a day, 365 days a year and if you are a small farmer you can't afford to employ anyone. Their kids all think it's a mugs game and do something less onerous for more money, weekends off and holidays.

It will soon all be mega herds of 1,000 plus, all kept inside as that will be the only viable way to keep a dairy herd. The Labour government even removed the option of raising veal calves as another income so we now import our veal. Not sure what that did for animal welfare. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

Exactly, I know one who regularly boasts about the different handouts and subsidies he receives while he swans around in his RRS or relaxes in his new Conservatory. Whistle

You can't milk a cow with a combined harvester. You could probably pluck a chicken with one though. Rolling with laughter GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver
