We have a 2011 Freelander 2 with the hesitation on pulling away problem. Dealer today told me that they can't fix it until LandRover come up with a solution (they have another car with the same issue). The car recently had a gearbox replaced and our previous FL2 had a similar litany of serious faults (clutch, half shaft, gearbox, throttle body etc). We like the FL2 especially for its off and on road performance but we can't take much more of this.

So what to replace it with - any suggestions? we need a car that's good off road as it's used daily on and off road.

From the experiences I have had with my dear lady's My2010 bought from new it was not the Freelander but the so called"factory trained official Swiss LR dealer's workshop personnel" that didn't have a clue how to rectify simple issues that were the main contributor to owner dissatisfaction, rather than the vehicle itself.

Just one example: In for first service - requested that a rattling tailgate was rectified. The fix - black electrical insolation tape affixed around the stricken plate. And yes, we do have the photos to prove what we report. But that is only one item of many.

Find a great knowledgeable experienced workshop for your a Freelander and life becomes very pleasant indeed.

After 2 Swiss dealerships we hopped across the border to Liechtenstein and now use the one and only official LR dealership there - grand. And let me say that whilst enduring the hopeless Swiss we had the strategy of when visiting family n friends in the UK to pop into two excellent LR service centres there: Duckworth's and TVLR - champion.

So first off find a competent service engineer, and then replace your current FL2 with another. Her Ladyship says she doesn't want to part with her's now - yet in Yr2 n 3 she was inclined to jump brand mucho rapido.

This is a question I've also been asking recently, but for different reasons - I love my Freelander, but having seen how LR have hiked the prices and lowered the specs for the new DS it may be my last LR!

The problem is that if you want a capable 4x4 there really isn't much choice. If you want a fashion statement you can look to Audi and BMW, and if you want a school-run SUV you're spoiled for choice, but if you want a genuinely capable 4x4 the FL2 is the best in its class by some way.

Alternatives? There's Subaru's Forester - that's a good car, albeit not as good as the FL, but it's not particualrly cheap to run and Subaru dealers are becoming an endangered species in this country. Jeep, perhaps? (Although personally I wouldn't have a Jeep.) Even Toyota don't seem to have anything in the sector - the Land Cruiser is too big and expensive, and the 4-Runner isn't available in this country. And that's about all I can think of! Oh, and I'd agree with earlier posters - FL over Evoque any day.

So I'd stick with the FL2 (as I intend to do) - it's still best in class.

What are Toyota RAV 4s like these days?

I tend to lump the RAV4 in with the school-run SUVs, but I may well be doing it an injustice. Maybe I'm just remembering what it used to be!

I had a RAV4 admittedly 5 years ago but I found it very dull, noisy and generally an unpleasant drive. Sluggish etc. Wouldn't go there again. ...

How much off road capability do you really need? I've just changed mine to a Volvo XC60 D4 SE LUX AWD, which I am more than happy with. It probably doesn't have the same off road capabilities, but it's much nicer to drive everyday.

I looked at another FL2, but the salesman couldn't be bothered to ring me to arrange a test drive after seeing him in the showroom and ringing.

The other reson for a Volvo was as a member of the Caravan Club we got a very good deal.

We also looked at a Q5, X3, VW Touraeg (tiguan the boot is too small), Hyundai Santa Fee, Mitsubishi Outlander and probably some others!
