I tend to take these stories with a pinch of salt. After all, Tesco's diesel may not have all the additives that the expensive Shell stuff has, but at the end of the day it has to meet the EC specification.

What's the forum view?

It would appear from the article that a cleaning solution had been left in the tanks.
I never use supermarket fuel since a friend of mine had a similar problem a few years ago after filling up at a Tesco in Kent then promptly broke down in France.
I now only use Esso or Shell who both price match my local Sainsburys. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

If cleaning solution in the tanker is the real issue, then it could have happened to anyone's fuel - Shell & BP included. It's nothing to do with the fact that it's 'supermarket fuel'

The question is, how would this cause £4,500 of damage to an engine?

It would not of caused 4500pounds worth of damage directly but the fact that when a common rail diesel injection system becomes contaminated all the related components must be changed !
This would involve tanks, fuel lines, rail, injectors and HP pump etc which with the labour as well mounts to a huge amount.

Diesel systems run at such high pressures and close tolerances the slightest contamination can do extreme damage. Jaguar x-type sport gone

It all depends on where the supermarkets source their fuel from and who they use to transport it. The large fuel suppliers tend to use dedicated tankers for transportation which will minimise the need to flush the tankers with cleaning solutions.

I have two colleagues with this problem in the last year or so, from two different supermarkets. One blamed cleaning solution in the tanker and the other petrol in the diesel from the tanker not being flushed.

As oldgeezer says, that is not the cost of the actual damage, it's the cost of repair to manufacturer's specification. If you put petrol in your FR2 and contact Land Rover, be prepared for a massive bill as they change the entire fuel system, even though it's possible that there's no actual damage! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

In my area BP standard diesel is £1.31 against BP ultimate at £1.39 per litre, that's nearly a 'fiver' extra per fill up. I haven't looked into it yet but surely I can buy these additives in a bottle that may do more than one tank fill at probably a less expensive price !!

I can see us getting censored with all these 'offs', I have been running the Ultimate for the last 5 fills at my local, suppose with my hearing I won't hear any difference as it sounds like a sewing machine on any fuel
