I have to say this sort of thing is the reason I buy from a LR dealer. With a simpler car I can understand and if necessary fix myself I'd go for the non-dealer option and save money, but the FR2 can have some very expensive faults, plus I ask where has it come from? If the dealers have a decent car they sell it themselves (when I traded in my MY07 last year they suggested that even that would go on the forecourt, because they knew it was a decent car with a history). If they know it's dodgy they'll trade it on. The dealers have a shortage of these cars. If one is being sold somewhere else then at least think twice about it. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Fuji White

Had the whine from the back on my 2010 MY XS and put it into the local garage I use.
New Pirelli tyres fitted to be sure but itturned out to be the RNS wheel bearing and the diff bearing (pinion?).

For he first time ever when I bought the car I took out an extended 3 year warranty so the garage claimed and after an assesor visit he approved the cost nd the insurance paid - result and the wheel bearing cost £145 and the diff repair £501. The diff was repaired by the local Land Rover dealer and refitted by the local garage.
The extended warranty has 2 years to run so perhaps for once it paid off?

Hope I don't need any more claims Smile

The dreaded whine has been getting worse over the last couple of months so I think it's time to bite the bullet and get it done. Are there any specific Q's I should ask? Aiming to go to Stratstone Swansea for a quote and take it from there. The whine actually hasn't been that bad but we've done a fair bit of miles over the summer so it is time to get it done.

Interestingly though the whine starts from around 20mph and goes in bands through the gears and when accelerated.

Any recommendations of an independent in or around Swansea, Carmarthen, Bridgend? The main advantage for us would be to get a courtesy car as my wife needs the car for work. 2007 LR Freelander 2 GS - factory tints, LR mud flaps, 2013 facelift)
Problems/solutions include: rear diff pinion replaced, stearing rack and pump replaced, alternator earth cable replaced (plus new alternator as misdiagnosed), throttle body replaced, MAP sensor replaced, secondary earth cable...

I've just finished changing over a reconditioned diff on mine. Wasn't too hard a job. Certainly consider it a DIY job for a competent hobbyist.

Hi, I've been reading this site for a while, but this is my first post so be gentle!

My rear diff bearings are gumbling and a LR dealer told me today that the repairs only last a year before needing replacement Shocked . What's been the experience of those who have had repairs?

I'm not sure I want to go down the suggested route of replacing the diff Big Cry

Thanks

That's a new one, but I might know where you go to be told that Wink
It should be repair and forget, if you pay for the repairs you should get a years warranty, but no, it is not repair that you would need to have done like an annual service.
There have been reports of Haldex problems if not done correctly, so best let the Main Dealer do it IMHO.

Thanks, that make sense. I suppose what I don't understand is whether it is simply the bearings failing at 35,000 miles Shocked or whether it is something more fundamentally wrong with the diff which means it should be replaced... I guess you pays your money and take your choice?

Mine went at 22k, sold it not long after, but not because of the Diff, there are a couple of instances on here where the bearings have been don twice, so no it's not a regular occurrence. It has been said that the cause was down to overtightening of the Diff in assembly.

Mine was making the dreaded rear axle whine/drone, esp between 20-40mph, and more lately accompanied by harshness and vibration in the drive train, esp moving off and coming to rest. 88k in the clock, so maybe not so surprising, and sadly not as simple as tyre wear (on Wranglers). Oh dear Crying or Very sad

So into local indy RR London for diagnostics and repair - yes the rear diff problem load and clear. I was worried that the drive train harshness might be something separate and nasty, but fortunately not.

Diff repair all done, good job and now drives like new. Am really pleased - only prob the bill at £670 - but then I'm paying London prices... Andy

A good result.

There is a certain specific procedure to filling the haled unit, involving the removal of an exact amount of fluid, which if not followed could result in damage to the unit due to the incorrect amount of fluid ... however, for the sake of a £3 100ml syringe on eBay, that procedure is a piece of cake ... voila 70ml of fluid removed...
