I have no tow bar, any one know of a cycle carrier min two bikes, that works.... If what make and how much

It works fine, but you can't get in and out of the boot when it's fitted. In my view, a set of roof bars and cycle carrier adaptors seems the best all round solution.

The best option by far is to get a removable towbar fitted and then use a towbar mounted bike rack. The tailgate can then be opened by tilting the bike rack (with bikes in place). The bikes are also very easily mounted or unmounted on the bike rack, and the rack itself is also very easy and quick to mount/unmount.


The best I have seen (and purchased) is the Thule type although a bit pricey maybe. I would consider this option up against the roof rails option which will also be an expensive alternative but in adition you will need a step ladder to be able to lift the bikes so high.

I already have roof bars for a roofbox so I am looking at roof mounted carriers - I have seen too many scratched boots from bikes

I also have a Labrodor who needs to get in and out of boot

Australians who use a trailer (farmers and others) always carry the dog on the trailer and not in the car
Sometimes they are not even tied in place and have problems staying in the trailer on sharp fast corners

I have tried all manner of cycle carriers and they all fall apart in time. I have been successfully using the cheapest possible roof carriers from Decathlon for 2 years now.
From memory they are about £12 each I have 3 on top of the car and they are very stable.i don't see the point in paying more than you have to for style when what you really need to be looking for is security. the decathlon ones are coated mild steel with a very secure fixing clamp for the downtube and straps for the wheel tray.
I only take them off to put the Tandem carrier on the car so they live outside for most of the year and they seem to be standing up to it just fine.

I'm considering fitting a tow bar purely (at lease for now) to fit a tow bar cycle carrier to. It also has the added benefit of giving driver that reverse into my car something much sturdier to hit that my rear bumper ards!

Looking for advice on both where to get a tow bar fitted and types of cycle carriers that fit onto them. I believe most require a fixed tow bar but I'm sure that I've seen one that will fit onto the swan neck or removal type somewhere.

Thule and Maxrax are some names i have heard good reports on

I used a Thule towbar mounted carrier with the Thule adaptor to allow for carrying four bikes on my FL1 and have now had a Westfalia removable towbar fitted to allow me to use it on the FL2:

It has been excellent; never really trusted carriers that 'hang' on the back. And now with the FL2 not having a side-hinged rear door I can use the 'tilt function' (and it works!).

I shopped around for the Thule carrier but in the end found that my local dealer, P F Jones in Manchester were cheaper than anything on the internet, including ebay. And they helped me fit it, cut and drilled the holder when it did not the FL1 perfectly (it's fine on the FL2) and gave me a free reg plate too - excellent and cheapest service by far - appreciate they are not down South but might be worth you contacting them: 0161 872 4755 and I think they sell on ebay too now, try this: http://www.pfjones.co.uk/

I have a large plastic toolbox in the back to stand on when loading 3 full size bikes onto the roof you can also use a plastic caravan step. I'm only 6 feet tall and have no problems reaching the roof centre.
