I too am not planning to change. My present FL2 is with me for the long term. Nothing to do with the DS. Just pure economics. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Well if you do go down the 3.0 V6 and want the Low Range, look to get an older one or one that had the option ticked when it went down the line. |

In this case the 3.0 V6 would be more likely to have a VW badge on the back! Touareg Escape, £44K. OK, I think it's an electrically-engaged low gear rather than a proper low range, but it's still more than the DS gets!

Are the first couple of gears on the 9 speed box not equivalent to low range? |

They may be, and since neither the Discovery nor the Touareg are available as manuals I guess there's little point in bemoaning the lack of a low-range manual DS (although the existence of such a thing would make me much better disposed towards it)!
I never thought I'd seriously contemplate a VW either, but the Touareg actually seems to be a very nice car, and is genuinely capable off-road. It perhaps lacks the ultimate capability of the Discovery, but it also lacks the delivery van looks and fashion-conscious buyers. Still sticking with the FL though - no way I'm actually spending £45K on a car! |

I've low range on mine as you know, you need to be in about 6th low before you get near 1st high. Also unlike I found with the Freelander, it always starts off in 1st, whatever, where as the Freelander would start off in second, only starting off in first in Command Shift, but also having to pull the stick back to physically select it. It may have been a one off, I did mention it at service time and was told it was normal. |
