Quick question: Going to be replacing PAS reservoir in a few days and my neighbour is going to give me a hand getting it onto axle stands. Having never done anything like this before I have no idea how to properly use an axle stand and I would prefer to know where to mount them rather than assuming my neighbour knows.

I know where the jack points are but that's not relevant is it?

So where do I place them?

The PAS reservoir is just under the bonnet. You don't need to be jacking the vehicle up and using axle stands for that job.

Apparently I need the wheels up as the fluid needs flushed so wheels need free movement.

When I changed mine, I just drained it, filled it, run it, turned it on lock to lock, repeat until fluid clear and then change reservoir. Make sure you use the green power steering fluid and not the red stuff though.

The thread I started suggested that the wheels had to be off the ground in order to do it. Would be great if this wasn't the case.

Yes, it should be done with both with both front road wheels off the ground. It's the only way to purge all the old oil out of the system.
Before commencing, make sure the car is in gear or park, handbrake on, and place a brick at the rear of each rear tyre for good measure.
I use the front subframe to place the axle stands. Jack one side up using the normal jack point, then place an axle stand under the subframe on the same side. Lock the stand and slowly lower the car jack. Remove the jack and repeat for the other side.
Make sure that both wheels are clear of the ground before you begin turning the wheel. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Here's a youtube vid showing someone filling the new fluid into the new reservoir and connecting the return pipe to the old reservoir. To flush through. He looks like he's using a jack but then again he's also using red fluid. Personally I can't see why it must be jacked up. Why not just jack one wheel off the ground if you are worry about loading the steering up?

It's because you can't turn the wheel without the pump running.
If you run the engine, you're at risk of drawing in air and running the pump without oil. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

use the axle stands under the subframe, not the jacking points, it makes bleeding the fluid smooth and easy with the wheels an inch off the ground
as a pointer have plenty of rags under the reservoir when you disconnect the pipes so as not to cover your engine in spilled fluid
while one turns the wheel left to right, the other can keep an eye on topping up the reservoir
very easy job, take your time and good luck - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement
