Removing the Steering Wheel

I am about to embark upon a project to retro fit a heating upgrade to her Ladyship's MY10 FL2's non-heated steering wheel having, after nearly 2yrs of research, finally discovering someone who really knows what this will entail. And it is not as straight forward as simply replacing her existing steering wheel with a new heated one from MY13/14.

But firstly despite searching the forum I cannot find a pictorial (or even in clear text) step-by-step guide to take me through removing her existing steering wheel and rotary coupler [sometimes referred to as the clock spring.]

(Have located on YouTube a PowerfulUK video re removing an old RRS steering wheel but I am not sure how appropriate that is in my circumstances.)

Therefore if anyone knows of such a guide I'd appreciate a link to that. Thumbs Up

ps: as this retro upgrade has never been achieved before to the best of my knowledge I will - if successful - publish on here a guide to the process and a list of all the parts required and from which of the different suppliers each component can be sourced Smile

I can't recall seeing that before, Offshore1987, has recently done this and claimed it was easy, might be worth dropping him a PM?

I'm already using mine in the mornings here, makes a welcome difference to stiff fingers in a morning, I hope it goes to plan for you, I am sure you may be the first of many applying this upgrade Thumbs Up

There's lots of parts on their way and from recent discussions held much work to be done once they arrive. Still nothing ventured (well lots of money on parts and soon to be time) nothing gained as they say.

Will post full report on "how to" if I succeed, or post pictures of her Ladyship's FL2 in a blaze of flames due to my incompetence Whistle

Thanks to the swift response of a knowledgable, accomplished and veteran gentleman member of this forum I am now in possession of the appropriate idiot guides to do this complete task i.e. the removal of both the steering wheel and the clock spring.

As I am not sure if he welcomes publicity he shall remain anonymous. Nonetheless - well done that man Bow down

Hi yes I did this last night with a torch Laughing

You need to buy or make a airbag removal tool ( I made one ) Remove airbag, then you will see the plugs as per powerfuls vid, you can either remove the steering wheel controls ( horns ) with the wheel in places or just remove the steering wheel then the controls ( upto you ) I think it was a size 25 torqe for the bolt that holds the steering wheel inplace, once you have removed that the wheel should pull off very easy. Now you can see the clock spring but to remove this you need to undo the two smaller torqes under the steering housing that hold the plastic housing inplace, once they are removed you need to pull the housing apart to undo the clips, then it just hangs there. Now you will be able to see the 3 cross head screws that hold the clock spring in place, once they are removed just unplug the plug on the left hand side and then slowly pull off the unit ( it has a load of pins on the back so be careful )

Went out to remove my steering wheel, airbag off then discovered I didn't have a big enough Torx bit
[was just expecting a Hex bolt as in the D3]
So resurecting this thread for confirmation that the Torx bolt size is indeed 25?
[before I go out and buy the wrong one!]
Can anyone confirm this [or not] please.

The correct Torx size is T45.
Just bought one and taken the wheel off.
Oh and fitted the MY14 heated steering wheel ........ but Wink

Offshore's T25 is titchy and Cambo's T50 is too big, but thanks for input Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

Well there you go.

When I did the steering wheel swap on mine I actually used an M8 Triple-Square Spline bit because a mate had borrowed my set of Torx bits, so I was just guessing at the T50 size because I hadn't used a Torx. Turns out that the M8 Triple-Square fits in to the T45 Torx head perfectly Smile 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers
