wont start battery flat continuing problem any suggestions

I have an 07 2 tdi and it has had this flat battery issue that many freelander 2 's seem to have. I have added another earth lead but this has made no difference. I tried to start it this morning and there were just a series of clicks when I pressed the starter button. I put a charger on it and within 45 minutes I could start it ok. can anyone suggest what could be the problem and how to solve it.
thanks

Have you checked the battery itself - could it just be a duff battery?

Also could be an alternator issue. As Pab says it could be a duff battery or the alternator might not be charging the battery? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

thanks for the replies.
the battery could be duff I suppose but this problem has been going on for years and the battery has been changed a couple of times to see if it would improve the problem.
it also has blue tooth although I don't use it but it could drain the battery. is there a way of making the blue tooth inoperable? maybe removing the fuse perhaps.
yes it could be the alternator too. unfortunately there are some many things that could be causing this problem.
if I put a battery isolator switch on the battery terminal would that sort the battery drain ?

If the battery has been changed a couple of times it's perhaps not likely to be that. It could be alternator, but I'd perhaps expect to see other symptoms if it was - charge warning light on the dash under heavy load, etc. So some kind of drain is perhaps more likely.

Fuse FD4 in the boot fusebox appears to be for the Bluetooth module.

A battery isolator would sort the drain, but cause other problems as various things reset when the power is disconnected - e.g. the windows and sunroof can need to be manually reset. It's not a solution I'd advise. As a temporary solution keeping a 'smart' charger conntected while the car is parked up for any length of time should at least ensure it will start.

I pulled the FD4 fuse but the screen started flashing on and off so maybe the fuses are connected to more than one particular operation.
I use the car for a few days and everything is fine then the next morning the energy is gone from the battery and it wont fire up the vehicle, but 45 minutes on a smart charger and it will fire up

This might help

Ring Automotive RBA4 12-24V Voltmeter With Croc Clips from Amazon for about £13.50 or even cheaper from other suppliers

Not only does it show the battery voltage but connected across the battery terminals with the engine running will test the alternator as well which should be around 14.5volts which is what the alternator should be putting back into the battery.
If your not getting that 14.5 or there abouts your alternator is causing the problem

This bit of kit is far cheaper than a garage doing the same alternator/battery check, I bought one and it is great and on the back of the packet also says what a fully charged / half charged /poorly charge battery reading should be. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

There are a few threads on here. You are double locking it I assume? Single locking seems to be a problem on the early models, as does using the tailgate button and not double locking afterwards. Make sure you are not leaving the auto wipers or lights on, and switch radio off. All these have been mentioned as causes. Also check the alarm isn't triggering overnight - another possible cause. If you are checking the drain on the battery remember the car should take a while (maybe an hour?) to switch off completely. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
