Evening all

Having a dandy with the steering wheel controls, the cruise control side seems fine but the right side ( radio controls and phone controls ) are being a pain, sometimes they will work, sometimes just the volume up will work, sometimes the volume up and next track work, sometimes even the mode button works

I took the air bag out, took the controls out, cleaned the conactors, checked the wires, all seemed fine and replaced ( yes I thought it working now! Worked fine until I went to use the car again and then bang all the problems back! )

Got a brand new steering wheel control unti this morning, ending with 500730 the same type that was already in place. fitted it to the truck and Yay it worked perfect locked the car and thought job done at last. Just gone out to the truck and bang SAME problems back again

Is there anything else I can try? Have checked the fues and that's fine

Most things I have read have just ending with people replacing the controls and that fixes there problems but im left with the same problem

The bit that's is confusing is that some of the switchs work but then some don't and then some start to work but not all?

Any help would be greatful as im stumped

I get the same problem, all I do and it works every time I get this problem is unlock the steering wheel adjuster and move the steering wheel in and out a couple of times and all the buttons start working again. Hope this helps you as well.

Ok that's kind of mad Yes after a few slams it now works ( but for how long ) ( Thank you )

This has got to be a conection problem in the steering? Anyone got anymore info on what next to try?

I think it's done it 3 times in the last 4 years. I found it out the first time when I was waiting for the wife at the train station bored out my head. One minute they wasn't working moved the steering wheel in and out just out of boredom and they stared working again. So looking at this way it's the first time she's saved me money anyway glad it worked.

Could it be the "clock spring" which is the contactor between the controls on the steeringwheel that turn with it and the static bits that stay still with the steering column? A dirty track/s would cause intermittent function.

I'd also agree the 'clock spring' is a likely candidate.

Guessing I need to remove the entire steering wheel to see this? I did buy some elec contact cleaner from Halfords the other day so if I can get to this part and give it a spray and wipe it should sort the problem?

The clockspring is contained in the module that the indicator and wiper stalks attach to. I don't know if anyone has taken it apart on the forum. A thread on heated steering wheels gives a cost of about £250.

The clock spring, as far as I am aware, doesn't have 'wiping' contacts as some believe, it is a coiled ribbon cable, the likely culprit for poor contact will be the connectors, I would imagine there wouldn't be a need to replace it. Simply unplugging and re plugging the connectors will clean them.

Getting married on Friday and honeymoon is next week so running out of time to get all these little problems done, guess some of them will have to wait till we get back

Hit the search button for Retro Fitting Cruise Control, this will show you how to remove the Steering Wheel, Clock spring lies beneath.

Have read all the posts over and over

Well got the wheel off and took the clock spring out and used elec contact cleaner and then vaseline on all the plugs and what not. It all went back on fine and is working great, but see if it still works in the morning, as it worked ok when i swoped the switch over and the then the next day it wasnt working again

Taking the clock spring out was rather easy tbh
