Rear differential fluid replacing

Hi all,

for a FL2 SD4 2011 140 KW, I would like to kindly know how to replace the fluids of the rear differential and Haldex coupling, as it seems to me that there are no drain plugs.

thank you

Giacomo

thank you ad210358,

thus as regards the rear differential, also the link confirmation that you can not change the oil.

You need to use a oil extractor to remove the rear diff and haldex oil.
Rear diff oil is drained from the filler plug hole, haldex oil from the filler hole but you wont remove all the oil. Replace the haldex filter whilst this is removed you can extract more oil this way.
This year i changed all my oil at 90,000 miles the haldex oil was dark and sludgy to me i think it should be changed at no later then 60k not the oem 150k or 10 years.

I change my oils on a four poster ramp in my mates garage in the evening with eveything still on the car.
I managed to draw out arround 600 ml as most of the oil i had inside had dried up resulting in the haldex not functioning properly. Whilst pulling away when stationary i would get a grinding noise whilst turning as the rear wheels would not free wheel.
The rear diff i extracted almost the full 1 litre of oil. All the oil i used was the oem supplied spec ie 3x haldex oil 300 ml approx but used 1 and a half approx. I had to use a large cattle syringe to fill the haldex as its awkward to gain access on the freelander. The rear diff oil is easier with the oem bottle just extend the fill nossle with a suitable bit of tube.

thank you

but how did you manage to extract 1 liter of oil, when it should contain 0.7 lt?
and the rear differential and the power transfer unit (Castrol BOT 118 Plus oil) are the same unit?

Sorry when replacing haldex oil I could only get in one and a half of the haldex oil into the haldex unit. Rolling Eyes
The active on demand unit only takes 650ml when empty this is only when the unit is been stripped out or is replaced with a new unit. When servicing I used Stratoil 0.65l x 2 but could not quite get in all of the oil as there was some old stuff left in the unit as it virtually impossible to get a tube inside the drain plug. So when replacing the haldex filter I drained more oil from there. When you changed the haldex oil replace drain plug switch on the ignition for 5 minutes don't start the engine. After 5 minutes switch off ignition remove filler plug and extract exactly 70ml of fluid then replace filler plug sealing washer and refit plug tighten to 35 nm torque.
Haldex oil filter Lr033398.
The rear Differental oil I used catrol epx 80w 90 lr003156 the unit is only 0.7 l capacity just extract oil oil. Please Note there is no provision to completely drain the old oil from the differential just extract as much as you can. Once old oil extracted refill until the oil a thin thread runs out of the filler hole.

The front transfer case unit uses the bot 118 plus 75w90 0.75 litres from empty, this unit is virtually impossible to extract oil from the unit. I had to remove the complete gearbox and changed both the gearbox and transfer box oil and replaced the clutch the same time. Censored wife rides the clutch. Big Cry

You can get the haldex oil cheaper from Volvo they do the stratoil in a 1litre bottle.

This is the type of syringe I used.

Here what I used to extract the oil:

thank you turboextreme and I'm sorry for all these questions

now everything is clearer
then the front differential is the Power Transfer Unit ?
and does not have drain plugs and filling ?

Giacomo

Yes the front differental is the power transfer unit. The unit does have it own filler plug but you cant get a tube inside to drain the oil out of the unit. I could only extract by tipping the unit whilst the gearbox was off. The unit is part of the gearbox but has its own oil resivour
