Ignition Live for Towing Electrics

Morning All,

I recently purchased an FL2 58yr with what looks like a LR Original tow bar and twin 7 pin electrics.

To save time I have used a 7 to 13 pin convertor to hook it up to my new caravan.

Everything work but the Ignition Switched Live to pin 9.. so my Fridge and battery charger does not get power while towing. After further investigation, it appears that the Ignition Live is not even wired in to the fuse box in the boot, as the fuse location does not have a fuse in it or the ability to install a fuse in it.

Is this normal? and has a specific option not been installed for this facility ?

Regards
Richard

Richard - to answer your question, no, it is not normal. Without seeing your installation it is difficult to give any recommendation apart from seeking out a motor electrician who should be able to identify the problem. My car has a LR fitted twin socket loom which I have converted to 13 pin. I can sort some pics if that helps.

Bob,

Thanks for your response.
As far as I can see the installation all looks ok.

The problem lies with the Fuse box in the boot near the spare wheel, the fuse location for the fridge to supply the Ignition Live does not have a connector for both side of a 15 Amp fuse, so would never create any connection to enable the Ignition Live..

You can put a fuse in its location, but it would never work. Nothing looks out of place or broken or messed about with, it just isn't there..

All very strange..

Richard

Richard - I would guess your trailer wiring is not LR in that case.

I checked mine - I have a 15 amp fuse in FA9 and a 40 amp fuse in FA11. When trailer is connected, do you have a trailer icon on the dash when indicators are selected? A LR loom will.

It should still be possible to have use the space in the rear fuse box to enable the Fridge etc, my first one was done like that without genuine electrics and worked fine.

Not sure what you are referring to there Andy. Is that not just the standard wiring kit instructions? 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

It is Bob, just thought it might help the OP on where the Fuse would go.

All sorted !!!

The dealer who fitted the tow bar and electrics must have used the diagram on the Topix installation document explicitly!!

As the diagram is a little incorrect and the fridge fuse was in the wrong location, the fuse box diagram in the F:2 owners manual is far more detailed and accurate, which pointed me to the correct location for the fridge fuse.

I now have Ignition Live to the pin 10 on the 13pin plug Smile
