Actually I could start with advertising brochure

NIssan glossy yes little technical data with repeat photos via fold out section not very impressed to tell the truth, I can't comment on the Freelander because I bought it second hand.

Looking on the internet both marks are fairly comprehensive from the manufactures in the data , however with the new X trail 2014 as it has only been released recently so there is very little about it for the UK (from owners), plenty from abroad as there are different variations that have been available for some time. I have looked at most on youtube but as I said little from the UK. All the rest are of previous versions which is not really what the comparison is about.

As for the Freelander a completely different story having been around for ages. Not only from the manufactures but also from owners pointing out the good and bad points, However major faults have ,if any, mainly been ironed out, something the Nissan has yet to be tested on.

Size wise there actually is very little difference between both makes, the Freelander with a slightly bigger engine so able to tow a heavier weight (2000 v 2200 kg) than the Nissan with only a 1.6 diesel although claimed to be the same previous 2.0ltr engine due to improvements. Specification can be found from both manufactures so no point in going over them here.

So basically one has to decide on a good proven tug with a slightly higher running costs designed for hard work over country type ground, or for a more road type version with some ability over the same terrain. the choice is up to the individual.

Ok I only took the Nissan out for a test run so can't do a direct comparison, but initially comfort wise they are on about par with each other, but I do reserve judgement until later with a good few miles on the Nissan.

This is the kind of comparison report I do. If you like it I will do more in depth when I get the new car. If not I will stop right now and post no more about the comparison. This will be mainly based on my Freelander, the HSE or other versions may be different in some respects Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Wish you we'll realspeed and hope you will keep posting on here

Personally I change cars around every 3 or 4 months, (with very little outlay due to motor trade connections) so to date have owned and driven pretty much everything that my budget allows. With well over 200 cars to date under my belt to date between me and the Mrs (I'm a mere 44yr old!) I can say that the Land Rover brand is a curious one for me

Its fair to say in my ownership, It's one of the most satisfying yet unreliable, but we all keep going back!
Any other product that gave so much cost and pain, you would stay away forever, yet this is my 7th landrover product!

Whilst I have enjoyed the prestige and performance of Bmw, mercedes, audi, and Lexus, mostly with engines over 3 litre, I can't help but wish for the worst weather possible to happen, just because I have a land rover on my drive.

As for the x trail, I'm afraid I'm not a fan, I had a 2011 model and it didn't do much for my grin factor. Sure it did the job of 75k in 8 months but I didn't bounce out of bed when I had a 700 mile round trip to do.

Each to their own I suppose, but as other members said earlier, if your decision is based on current cost increasing by £100 verses depreciation on a newer car that has worse depreciation then that's your choice of course, but I would happily pay the premium if it meant having a smile, bouncing out of bed ready to take on the British weather and maintain an owners position on this friendly forum, just my opinion of course

Whilst the current Freely is my wife's daily drive, which I enjoy at the weekends, it's not a car I can use for business racking up approx 120k p/a, but one thing is certain, a Land Rover vehicle is what I have used from Nov to Feb for the last seven years of business travelling covering a patch from Oxford to Aberdeen

Good luck with the xtrail and hope it meets your needs

the big thing with Landrover owners is the marque, and when we drive a Landrover it is also an expression of our British values and status in society.

also the fact that they do the business when required is another reason to own one !!

that's why the Royal family have always had Landrovers, and will continue to whether in London or Balmoral.

Landrover is just as much as a life statement as it is a vehicle.

The thing is the Royal family are given the cars they do not have to buy them, that is why they have them. They go around in Rolls Royce but think which country owns the mark *** Germany*****

I am proud as the next person to be English , but to say about LR (incidently owned by TATA India) when everything else on buys comes from abroad !!!!! I often have to smile to myself, especially when the English football team are in competition, are those people flying the national flag and yet driving foreign cars, say no more.

So I think that being loyal to the LR mark being English is blown out of the water.

Sorry all but one does need to look at who owns what before making understandably misled loyalty comments about "English" cars
So I can't see much difference between buying a Japanese car against a German ownership one or an India ownership one

Just to redress the balance a little, just because the owners are Indian doesn't automatically throw away years of heritage, the fundamental roots are still British.

Why compare with Honda, Nissan ain't Honda, but if realspeed doesn't tow he may be OK. When I suggested a look at the the X-Trail OH wouldn't even consider it, Said he'd had enough of the far east copies and wanted a proper car again, so the divorce is on hold again Very Happy my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

So we all have our own thoughts and ideas on cars fair enough and yes LR are now a good make since TATA took them over. Before that they were rubbish or at least my Range Rover was, that had more problems with under 30,000 miles than you could possibly imagine and LR wolverhampton (Bushburys at the time) were so unhelpful I threatened to drive it thru their showroom. Just one minor thing among many many others was the central locking either went up or down on the move and parking near a radio mast locked us out completely. even emergency lock unlock several times didn't work

The service manager, a right pratt, tried telling me it was, now get this " sir it is the superlock override and it needs every door to be refitted with a new lock" and wanted me to pay for the work to be done

So I put the keys on the Ranger Rover roof and the door locking started working on/off all by itself. he had no answer to that.

Yes I did tell him a few choice words as I had only bought the car from them 7 days before and only 3 years old. So please do not tell me about LR heritage as from personal experience AT THE TIME it stank. I wont even start on the rest of the problems Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Yes a 1.6 diesel engine with supposed to have a power output now the same as a 2 ltr one. When I test drove it for me and my wife it appears to have sufficient get " up and go" for our needs.

AS I have posted I will try and do a completely unbiased comparison leaving out personal preferences. A lot of professional car reviewers don't actually have the vehicles they are testing very long so not familiar with them especially 4x4's or crossovers. Most I suspect are more used to "ordinary" cars and where body roll is mentioned most taller 4x4's have that to one degree or another yet reviewers try and compare to a sports car. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner
