I have a document I created using pages on a Macbook Pro , I update the figures on it weekly but havn't found a way to lock the document and open via a password.
I did export it as a pdf file which allows me to password protect it but cant edit/update the pdf doc only view it .

Any ideas ?

Just found out how to do via document inspector , son told me it couldn't be done , sorted now

Just out of curiosity, how do you find pages? I bought MS Office 2011 when I bought my MacBook Pro 3 years ago.

Pages works fine for me , just use it for simple documents labels and a spreadsheet , followed your thread re the ssd drive and tempted to do the same on my early 2011 MBP .
Upgraded the memory with 2 x 4mb Crucial sticks when I got it 3 yrs ago so reasonable confident with the swop , its the software side I dont fully get ( for booting ? )
Mine takes 1.40 to fully boot up .

You should definitely get the SSD. Just make sure you back it all up to time machine first. I bought a 2TB external HDD for that.

Mine was 1 minute 40 from switch on to log on screen. It's now 12 seconds at the most. Once logged in, Firefox and Mail open instantly and iTunes is virtually instant. I've bookmarked the YouTube videos which show how to go about it.

I back up once a month to an external drive , so does that mean I have everything on that already or do I have to take account of the operating system ? , sorry for the question ( old user )

All your personal stuff and settings are on the time machine backup. The OS (currently Mavericks) needs to be re-installed via a flash drive. The video shows you how to do all this.

In a nutshell, once you have the USB flash drive prepped and ready with the OS on it and your backup done, you take out the HDD, put the SSD in, re-install the OS and finally restore all your stuff from backup using migration assistant.

Doc is there a min size I need for the flash drive ?

Sorry for the late reply. Minimum 8GB. I bought a 16GB Sandisk from Amazon for £5 plus postage. You can wipe it afterwards with disk utility and use it for photos or whatever.

I can post the videos I used if you need them and the crucial website has a feature that allows you to pick your exact computer so you are guaranteed the correct SSD.

Beware when doing the flash drive that OSX Mavericks craftily uninstalled the installer once the installation was complete

So it won't show in the applications folder. I had to re-download it from the app store then quit the installation so it left the installer sat there. I could then follow the steps in the video about using terminal. Took almost an hour for the terminal command to complete the USB aspect. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
