Just dreaming mate. Smile

Cape York = three weeks. The most I can afford this year is two, so at the moment I’m stuck in the big smoke and due to some unexpected expenses I’m working my balls off. Maybe next year.

I was looking forward to your report on the Simpson crossing. Did you go?

I haven't got a car I trust to take remote at the moment. The Landy has periodic shudders and the Jeep has some air making its way into the fuel lines causing failure to start at random intervals. The desert is an expensive place to break down. Did you read on Exploroz about how many cars have been written off up the Cape by water crossings this year? Don't become a statistic, walk the crossings first, especially Palm Creek and Gunshot. Sorry to hear about the balls.... Laughing

Not to worry about Palm Creek and Gunshot - I've got a bra Wink Seriously if I go to Cape York I'll definitely stay on the Developmental Road. Nearly 40 vehicle written off so far!!! Don't you suspect some of them have done your suggestion to get rid of the old car? Very Happy

I'm itching for a long drive, maybe end of September, say to Lightning Ridge or Mungo NP or White Cliffs. I've been to Mungo and White Cliffs, I should go to Lightning Ridge. Do you know anything interesting around there?

To have both beasts disabled sucks!

There is the Border Track through Scorpion Springs in Western Victoria/South Australia. Start off in the Murray Sunset /Big Desert area. They close it in summer due to the heat so now is ideal. Narracorte Caves are an attraction close by as well. There's a few thousand kilometres and a lot of 4wding for you. I'm happy to have been there and seen it but I'm not really a fan of endless soft sand tracks through low Mallee Bush scrub. Your4X4 TV show on Fox did an episode out there recently. Mate, I think those cheerleaders will be camping out there at that time... Wink

Uf, the Border Track is a great suggestion. I was thinking initially about something more civilized, like a loop to NSW/Queensland border - Bald Rock National Park and the likes, then to Lightning Ridge and some of the small historical towns on the way back, but after looking at the Border Track I am tempted. What do you think about the trek on ExploreOz: http://www.exploroz.com/TrekNotes/WestVic/...rqc_tabs=2. It says low difficulty, but elsewhere they say "The Border Track presents extremely difficult driving conditions. If you are not fully prepared, and supported by other vehicles, don’t go!"

ps What about the new Disco?

I'm not too sure about recommending the Border Track really. It's one of those tracks they reckon you should do though I didn't find it particularly difficult and I'm positive you wouldn't either. There are a few interesting sites but a lot of dull Mallee scrub in between. The sand is pretty soft and that would catch a lot of inexperienced drivers and give it a difficult rating for most.
Your trip would be pretty good and more civilised, not much dirt. The Warrumbungles are worth a look and the observatory at Coonabarabran is interesting. I haven't been to Lightning Ridge so you can tell me what it's like.
I'll wait and see on the Disco. Land Rover are definately making their cars less off road friendly with big rims and slick tyres etc. I think I'll stick with my Jeep for the time being. The thing is comfortable, powerful, cheap to run and goes just about anywhere I point it....provided it starts. Laughing
