Not been there but me and a couple of friends are riding to lake Garda in July (be going over it around 7/8th) and are going to go up St Gottards Pass. (Sounds rude! |

I've been over a couple of times and can be a great alternative to the tunnel, especially when there's been an accident (keep checking traffic alters for this? I once spent 6 hours waiting for the soddin thing to open) however, the pass is only open in the summer and early or later snows can block them, then you will need to make sure you carry snow chains. Oh and also remember that we use winter tyres over here so if you plan a winter trip, make sure you've got some appropriate willies on you truck. Have fun and enjoy the trip, it's stunning! |

Done it several times. Much, much better than the tunnel! You can stop for lunch with a view at the top. John

If anyone is running over the St. Gotthard Pass this summer you should be aware that on the northern approach to the lower section from Göschenen to Andermatt (which takes you across the famous "Teufelsbrüke" - Devils Bridge) there are lane diversions in place so expect slow moving traffic |
