Hi there, I'm driving down to lake maggiore via Baden Baden, planning to go over San gottardo pass.

Anyone been over it, looks a great drive.

Not been there but me and a couple of friends are riding to lake Garda in July (be going over it around 7/8th) and are going to go up St Gottards Pass. (Sounds rude! ). Should be interesting on a scooter if it's wet as its mostly cobbled! If you are going there before us, let us know how you get on. Plenty of vids on YouTube.  Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I've been over a couple of times and can be a great alternative to the tunnel, especially when there's been an accident (keep checking traffic alters for this? I once spent 6 hours waiting for the soddin thing to open) however, the pass is only open in the summer and early or later snows can block them, then you will need to make sure you carry snow chains. Oh and also remember that we use winter tyres over here so if you plan a winter trip, make sure you've got some appropriate willies on you truck. Have fun and enjoy the trip, it's stunning!

If anyone is running over the St. Gotthard Pass this summer you should be aware that on the northern approach to the lower section from Göschenen to Andermatt (which takes you across the famous "Teufelsbrüke" - Devils Bridge) there are lane diversions in place so expect slow moving traffic

As an alternative to the Gottard Pass, and much more remote, higher, spectacular and beautiful - with far less traffic - give yourself and family a treat and go over the Nufenen Pass (only open June to October - weather permitting.)

From the north the climb starts in the Goms valley at the village of Ulrichen. From there it is a dramatic hairpin 14kms steep climb to the top of the pass followed by a slightly gentler, sweeping curves, 22kms decent through the valley of Bedretto to the town of Airolo at the Southern foot of the Gottard pass. If approaching from the south take note that the road signs for the pass are in Italian - Passo d. Novena; you are in the Italian speaking Swiss Kantone of the Ticino. Enjoy.
