Hi I have not been on for a while, but have a question which I know someone will provide the answer to. I will be collecting my new Metropolis in September, but as it's a off the shelf sale it has no spare wheel. I am having trouble sourcing a reasonably priced 19 inch spare, but can get hold of a 18inch alloy, question is will the 18inch be ok to use as a spare or will it cause damage to the transmission. I know it's probably already been asked, and is in here somewhere but after a search I cannot track it down !! Freelander 2 GS 2011(facelift)

If it is an 18" Freelander Wheel and Tyre, it will be fine, all Freelander 2 Wheels and Tyres have are the same overall diameter, so you can fit 17" 18" or 19". |

Stand the 18" wheel and tyre against the 17" one. You will see that they are the same size. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

If the 16,17,18 or 19 inch wheels have 235 in the tyre size then that's fine

While all comments OK about being same diameter I would not want to use a different size for anything other than short emergency use. Just think about the stiffness in vertical direction, and to lesser amount radial and transverse. With less or more rubber sidewall it will mess up all the loads into drivetrain. Who knows the effect? Maybe within design tolerance but why risk for a few quid? FL2 11 S Black 😂 Gone Disco2 TD5 GS |

If it's a different sized wheel you would obviously only use it for emergency while the other is repaired. In which case you might be able to source a steel wheel cheaper. I'd keep an eye on e-bay as they do come up quite regularly.

It would have to be for emergency use, it wouldn't be legal to use it all the time, otherwise it would pass an MOT. |

Not the case I think. It has all been explained on here somewhere. Can't remember the reason but examples - you can fail an MoT for having loose wiring, or for excessive emissions. These are not illegal. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Thanks for all your imput, all information taken on board including the steel wheel route, which I have searched for and been unable to source so far. I think adding all the information together I will probably be looking to get a full size alloy spare from this site or Ebay this would elieviate any of the what if's. Freelander 2 GS 2011(facelift)

Will definitely fail mot. On an mot test, tyres on the same axle must be the same size, width and aspect ratio. Only exception is tyres with an unmarked aspect ratio matched with an '80' aspect ratio tyre. (Unmarked tyres are 82% aspect) eg 165/13 and 165/80/13. Precisely - that's MoT regs. But it is not a legal requirement. Otherwise the majority of modern spare wheels would be illegal. And they aren't.
