Rear Diff Issues on Test Drive!

Hey Guys

Went and test drove a 2010 TD4.e FL2 HSE manual at Farnell Leeds yesterday. There was a very loud rear noise that the salesman mentioned first!! Obviously now reading online it is suffering from the well documented rear diff issue. It's so frustrating that, although the salesman was saying something didn't seem right, he was very vague and playing totally dumb, as was the Sales Manager. Surely they would know about this issue with the FL2?

I have no doubt that they would sort the issue pre-sale and if it wasn't sorted I would reject at collection time.

Question is, would you buy on the understanding that the issue would be fixed as part of the sale (it comes with 12 months LR warranty anyway), or would you walk?

Is this a sign that the vehicle would be a troubled child?

Any advice very welcome.

We drove two to compare BTW and we were very impressed. Bow down

Cheers, M

2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

I don't think the diff noise is an indication of a 'trouble child' as it is fairly common. But I absolutely would not buy the car unless it was sorted pre delivery. Your 12 month warranty is no guarantee of everything being sorted out. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.
60 000 miles averaging 35mpg

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.

I had the same experience on my 2008 HSE. The first test drive was a dream. Fell in love immediately.

I went back 2 days later to buy the vehicle and took another test drive as they gathered all the paperwork. The salesman and I heard it kick in and we both turned to look at each other and said "What's THAT?!" Having done the research, I was pretty sure I knew what it was. I stipulated I'd purchase the vehicle if they made the repair (and tossed in a new set of tires, too). This was done in February and I haven't had any trouble sense (I've put about 8000 miles on it).

I actually bought mine with a very loud droning noise from the rear assuming it was the rear diff and pricing a discount accordingly. A friend suggested it could be the rear tyres so I bought a new set of alloys and tyres and the noise has disappeared.
