Had a problem with my Freelander a few weeks ago. On trying to start had no lights or instuments showing and the start button would not work. I called the AA who sent a contract mechanic in a RR. He checked battery voltage,too low, then connected jump leads but no difference, still no start. He connected his diagnostic device which reported an Instrument Cluster fault, sounds expensive to fix. Vehicle was then recovered, not easy with steering lock on, to my local independant. He after a few more checks diagnosed a battery fail. Apparently AGM batteries are not compatable with jump leads and have a shorter life expectancy, mine was 4+ years old. A new, expensive, battery sorted the problem. In the light of this my advice would be to replace an AGM battery as soon as any problem is suspected in order not to get stranded.

I'm looking at a Varta F21 battery, when looking on the net some companies are doing them for around 130-140 quid. Prices keep changing but there are loads of battery sellers so should find a good price. Thing I found when looking was that if I put my reg into the battery search it brings up the 70Ah batteries. Just been in touch with a local independant landrover garage and talking to them it seems it is not just a straight battery change but also has to go onto a diagnostic to reset the stop/start system on the car. Makes one wonder if this stop/start technology is really worth it? The battery dropped 1.0v since I fully charged it and went on a 12 mile round trip, so definately time to get a new one.
So tomorrow he his going to let me know costs etc for a new battery. He agreed it is on the way out which I suspected. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

I've read on here somewhere and on the eBay workshop manual I have that when you change the battery you need to re-calibrate the voltage sensor BUT if you don't re calibrate the sensor it will do it on its own over 48 hours. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Just had a phone call from local garage, seems an OEM land rover battery is over £300 fitted and a Varta F21 is around £160 +£35 fitting charge total just under £200.

How on earth can Land Rover rip off customers with such an over priced battery? it is beyond belief. Both batteries have the same spec and more than likely land rover use Varta batteries anyway and put their own brand name on it Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

My battery is a Varta, its the original one as its got the land rover badge on and varta too. Ive seen the F21 battery for around 130-140 online. The LR dealer sounds to be ripping people off. Just had a Varta F21 battery fitted now on charge to get it up to full capacity. The independent garage was saying there is a lot of people will be going to high street well known retailers and sold the wrong batteries. small charge for using auto logic to
