Anyone replaced 17 inch wheels with bigger ones.

Hi.I have a 59 plate GS fitted with 17inch Wranglers and all four are getting low so am considering a set of evoque take offs. Has anyone any experience of doing this .I am keen to know what differences it makes to ride and handling and also which is the best size to go for. I realise there are cost implications but don't do big milage.

I didn't realise you could, when i went from 17" to 19" it cost me £30k as i had to buy the car aswell, those bloody salemen, i feel conned now Confused

I bet if you searched, you won't find a single thread relating to this, but feel free to prove me wrong

Is it the big wheel look you're after (all bling) of filling the arches?

I'm hankering towards leaving the 17's and getting the biggest rubber possible to fill the arches - looks good and better ride over the UK's potholes! Probably just trying to recreate the Mr T A-Team van look!!!

Me told indeed. I wish I had the time to trawl through this site . But alas. Too busy . Thanks for your reply to be honest Im not actually bothered about the look.But as Im due a new set of rubber was just looking at the options. l m new to freelanders so was trying to find out the pro's and cons of bigger wheels especially in relation to ride and handling. Before I go and spend on 17s.

If you're thinking of going anywhere near off road regularly, I'd stick with the 17"s as the taller tyre will give your rims more protection and more options if you need to drop pressures in mud or sand etc. I'm perfectly happy with the on road ride of the standard 17" setup.

FL2 comes with a 19" option anyway if you want to go bigger so stick to that and you won't be far off. Td4 XS manual, Orkney Grey, MY2014

I have a set of 18's for summer and 17's for winter. 17's give a softer ride. 18's give more positive handling. No experience of 19's and 20's but I guess they would give more of the same - ie harder ride, stiffer handling. Obvious really. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I don't understand why someone would wait for answers, when the answers are already there, surely it would have been easier to search read than wait four hours for a answer? but here are a few threads i quickly found for when you have some free time

Anyway, hope you get your information, and for the record, moving from 17's to 19's made no difference in ride comfort or handling to my car, tyres have more of a bearing factor in handling as some brands are good in dry terrible in wet and others visa versa, myself i ran 17 wranglers and then 19' conti UHP and then UHPe (low rolling resistance tyres) they gave me 2 mpg more, but at the same time i started using shell fuel

the difference in ride on 17,18,19 is not noticeable in my opinion, not in a 4x4 on tarmac anyway Thumbs Up

myself, Im heading towards a set of General Tyres Grabber AT or 255/55 Cooper Zeon LTZ, thinker tread should last longer than my conti UHP's and be better come winter

Do you like the look of damaged rims?

Then change from 17" to something larger, larger rims = smaller tyre height = rims closer to kerb

On a heavy softly sprung 4x4 the wheel size/tyre combination make less of an impact to handling than it would on a saloon car. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Thanks Guys. Ive read all of the above and a few more bits too. and based on what ive read I picked up a set of evoque 18inch wheels with brand with pirellis. Ive noticed a big difference in the road noise and an improvement in the handling. So in my view worth foing. Thanks again.

I had GG AT's on my Defender and a family member n a FL1. Brilliant tyre in all conditions. When my Wranglers wear down they will be my new tyre. Thumbs Up

I currently have 17" GG ATs on the Freelander. As an all-rounder for on- and off-road use I agree - they're brilliant and are an ideal all terrain tyre (which is what I want). But for road use only I wouldn't buy them (or any other AT for that matter). IME wet grip is significantly less than a good road tyre (as reflected in the AT's wet braking rating) and the blocky tread means fuel consumption is slightly worse too.

It's horses for courses - if you want an all-rounder for on-road and mild to moderate off-road use the GG AT is ideal. But for road use I'd stick with a road tyre.
