Day Running Lights Installation: Help Needed !

Dear Freelanders,

Due to a change in law in Switzerland, I need to drive my freelander 2 with the lights on all day long. The issue is:

- If I set them to auto, they don't turn on as long as there is light
- I use them manually I sometimes forget to turn them on ( 30 € fine ) or to turn them off ( battery ?)
-

I talked to my local garage and they said I would need to replace the fog lights with LEDs, but, on top of 800 €, I'm not too keen on losing my fog lights...

My thoughts were more on the direction of Phillips or OSRAM's Led solutions ( see links attached )on the grill:

http://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/12825WLEDX1...ts-drl-12v

Has anyone installed those ?

If yes, could you explain how you did it ? Basically where and how you attached them, how did you pass the cables to reach the battery and where did you put the transformer / black box attached to the cables...

My mechanical knowledge is close to 0, and I'm really afraid of damaging something... Big Cry

Thank you very much in advanced for your feedback

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Baltic Blue

A Dealer can (I believe) programme the car to a "Swedish Light" function, whereby the lights come on as the engine is started, and remain on whilst the engine is running.

It is my understanding that in certain Scandinavian countries, this is also the law, hence the option is already there if required. Foraging near Gaydon....

What Badger said - most modern cars have the feature for that reason.... Also check - if the law is new it may only apply to cars built after a set time just like over here.

The new law came into effect from the 1st January this year.
It applies to all vehicles using the public highway regardless of date of first registration, and, to all vehicles using Switzerland's road network regardless of the country in which they are registered in.

To "Scandinaviate" your FL2 it will cost you approximately the price of half a tank of diesel here in Switzerland - depending on your FL2's model year. For that money you'll have your headlights automatically on at the touch of your "START" button. Thumbs Up

Hi Athelstan,

I asked my LR dealer here in Zurich, but they said the senor for the Auto lights shuted down the power for the lights when sun hit it and that there was no way around that.

They said they could turn them on when setting the lights to "off", breaching in a way the sensor; but whenever I would drive to a tunnel, I wouldn't have back lights unless I turned them on, which sounded to me dangerous.

Might be that they just wanted me to buy the 800 chf sollution they proposed at first...

Does the " Scandinavian solution" work for any Freelander 2 models ? Is it just connecting it to a computer, or some " electric work" is required ?

What model year is your FL2 Question
And your VIN?

With that data my man (official LR) can double check that his solution works on your vehicle and that his costing is accurate. From Zόri you can be with him in less than 90 minutes (subject to traffic on the motorway)

[quote="cucufate696"]Hi Athelstan,

Your LR dealer is either a fool who dosen't know what he is talking about or trying to stitch you up, I had a Disco with auto lights and had it converted to Canadian DRL (all exterior lights on what D or R was selected and park brake released) and it worked perfectly with no effect from the auto light sensor. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

seems a strange ruling considering should I just happen to want to take my care over there for a holiday, there is no way would I mess about with my car lighting just to please the Swiss authorities. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Italy 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Santorini Black

Thumbs Up
We in Italy have the same law, and on all highways we need our lights on.
Its been like this for about 10 years...
Its become automatic for me.. I go on a highway or byway and i switch the lights from automatic to manual on. When i stop and pull the key out, the gong alerts me that i left my lights on, so i switch them off by turning them to auto again.
Laughing
You get used to it... Its not that bad.. Apart from changing the bulbs more frequently
