Hybrid Racing (NOT Yawn!)

This weekend sees a race for hybrid and electric vehicles Yawn

There's a diesel which uses a flywheel to store energy. Another uses capacitors. And there's one with a little 2-litre engine and some batteries.

Oh, and they each have around 1,000 BHP Very Happy Yep - it's Le Mans, with yet another set of radical rule changes which promise some interesting racing. The diesel with flywheel is 10-time-winner Audi's entry, whilst Toyota has the capacitors (supercapacitors, naturally) and 2-litre with batteries is from Porsche.

And check out the bizarre Nissan in the link below - it looks like it would understeer like crazy and/or tip over - I guess we'll find out!

The Audi mechanics have a little bit of work to do before tomorrow's start. There you go guys, rebuild that...!

Amazingly the driver (former winner Loic Duval) is fine, but won't now be taking part in the race.

In the end I managed to miss the finish (busy elsewhere) but looked like a really good close race.

Audi took first and second - with the car in the picture above coming second (albeit without Duval, and after a few repairs). Toyota third. What was amazing, though, was just how close the three main contenders were, despite their completely different approaches to hybrid technology. With only a couple of hours to go only 4 seconds separated the (then) leading Porsche from the second place Audi. Unfortunately the Porsche then hit problems, or it could have been an even closer finish.

Who said hybrids are boring!
