Exploding Sunroof

So heading home this evening on the M62 just passing Heartshead Moore Services and the Sunroof exploded on my MY13
Freelander.

Anyone else heard of sunroof failures like this on a Freelander? It made one hell of a bang! FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

When you say "exploded", presume you mean the glass has shattered?

Driving under a bridge and something has fallen from above or been dropped maybe? MY2010 TD4 HSE Santorini Black, 19" Alloys, Almond Leather, Lux Pack, Rear Spoiler, Adaptive Xenons

Not related to Freelanders, but I was standing in my kitchen making a cup of tea one morning when I heard a very loud "ping" noise. I eventually worked out that the glass in the oven door had shattered. No reason for it to go at that moment - the oven is 15 years old.

I guess if there is a flaw in the glass or a pressure point (the oven door glass was bonded to the surrounding frame) then it can just shatter without particular reason. 2010 Freelander 2 HSE Auto Santorini Black / Ebony Leather

I hadn't passed under anything at the point when it failed, it went with somewhat of a bang and seems to 'explode' upward and downward. Quite a considerable amount of glass went skyward and landed on the roof and the rest landed inside.

I don't think anything hit it, had an object struck it at a sufficiently steep angle to cause a failure I would expect to find said object inside, if wouldn't have bounced off. There was nothing inside the vehicle when I searched it.

Its now with Landrover whilst they look at it, I won't be happy if they try and claim it failed because it was hit by something! FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

Glass is made from sand, sand contains metal ores, though every attempt is made to remove these ores occasionally some get through. Glass is a semi liquid and the toughening process put the hardened surface under tension. Should a metal particle be included in the glass, minute and undetectable under normal inspection move about due to temperature changes and touch the tensioned surface it is enough to shatter the glass, this can happen anything from just out of the factory to any time in its life my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Well the Dealer says its not a warranty job and I'll have to pay or claim on my insurance. To me this is a failure of the glass, either design or manufacture either way it should not have failed without obvious external influence.

I've contacted Landrover to see what they have to say. FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

I have seen it on quote a few vehicles on warm summer days. Both sunroof and windows. It did make me wonder if expansion of the body during summer can flex and twist glass to the point of breaking. Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue

Well Landrover have flat refused to repair it stating I can't prove the failure wasn't caused by an impact.

So now the insurance are going to cover it using the glass cover but even sorting that out was a joke, I'm very diss appointed with Landrover and the Copley dealership. I'm going to pick the car up today, hopefully they've cleaned the glass out of it. FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

The amount of distortion you can apply to a toughened glass screen is quite mind boggling, in the 60's when we changed the screens for racing on Minis. Removing the toughened screen was sitting between the front seats and kicking it out with soft shoes. The screen bent with a 100mm gap between the body and glass with the sides still in the seal. The glass will not shatter unless it comes into contact with a sharp object. The answer to increasing failures may be due to the source of the glass and the quality control at the glassworks in removing ores from the sand before processing. The use of laminated glass though eliminating this problem makes the glass more subject to stress cracks due to body flexing, though sunroofs would generally not be affected, the panoramic bit could be. Is the dealer or LR responsible? very much depends on the contract with the glass manufacturer, it may be a batch problem or even a small change in the area where the sand came from. I had a patio door that exploded at six months old, just sitting there open on a hot summers day. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
