Just a headscratcher .....

Our range says 114miles to go...the the needle jumps down to zero and light comes on... Then when it feels like it it jumps back up to nearly half.
Any ideas?

Underneath the drivers side rear seat is a rubber/plastic cap around 6" in diameter as I saw it the other week and wondered what it was for

if you remove that cap there should be a metal disc with screw/bolts on it. That is the top of the float, remember there is a seal ring so if removing it be very carful it doesn't tear/rip. Lifting it out should reveal the float.
If I were doing it I would first buy a replacement unit and seal and chuck out the old one.

You are dealing with fuel directly in the tank so do it outside on a clear day because of the fumes. I would never replace or muck about with such a delicate bit of gear. REPLACE EVERY TIME AND DON'T LOOSE THE SCREWS.

Maybe even disconnect the battery so no risk of sparks

My car started doing it this week. I've spoke to the Indy I use who reckons it's a common issue. He is going to update the software as that is said to usually fix the probłem. If not my Indy says the wiring will need replacing which is a big job as the tank needs to come out.

The tank is a complicated set up as it has two fuel senders in it, hence the need to remove the tank to sort out the issues. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

The bung under the rear seat does lead to the fuel senders, unfortunately it doesn't line up with them, bit of a tease really.
You can get to the connectors, try unplugging and cleaning - costs nowt, takes ten miutes, nothing to go wrong.

Software fix has helped in some cases, I replaced both sets of senders, this fixed mine, nothing was found to be wrong with the originals, but replacing them cured the fault. Vast majority of the cost in replacing the senders is the labour (pig of a job), so don't skimp, replace them both if you get that far.

There are quite afew threads on here about fuel gauges etc. software updates have fixed some issues, hard wiring the senders sometimes help or just replacing the senders has cured the issues.

When I spoke to the indy I use he said he would recommend a software update first. He asked if ever I had got the steering column error message. I have in the past. He said that the software update is linked to a instrument cluster issue which causes the steering column issue and fuel gauge issue.

I asked about replacing the senders (after reading a few threads on here), the indy said the senders will be fine, it will be the wiring that needs replacing which is a big job to get the tank out. He said that he has done quite a few freelanders and all but one of these have been fixed by the update. He also told me that if it was a disco that had the issue he would just change the wiring on it.

Makes me wonder if when replacing the senders that this is curing the problem as the wiring is being replaced by a new unit? I looked online and the RH sender and pump is about £160 and the LH sender is about £80

My fuel gauge was playing up every day last week, I disconnected the battery for ten minutes and it seems to have cured the issue. Car been back in today. Had the tank re-wired, hopefully that's cured the probłem. There is a technical bulletin covering the subject, diesel corrodes the wiring in the tank creating a short circuit and giving rise to an erratic fuel gauge. Every couple of months my fuel gauge and read out suddenly drops to zero with the warning light on and sounder..... sounding.

I used to just ignore it and wait for it to go back up a couple of mins later.............until the last time it happened and the car, thinking it had run out of diesel, went into limp mode in the motorway fast lane. Most exciting.

Onto the hard shoulder, switch off, wait, switch on, fuel readout back to correct level. engine revving up, mop brow, drive off.

Now when the low fuel warning comes on my eyes are glued to the fuel gauge to see if it is rapidly dropping to zero, or just telling me to think about refueling. 2007 TD4 SE Manual Santrini Black

Mine never went into limp mode when the needle reached zero. Mine was hopefully fixed this week by the indy I use. He showed me a technical bulletin for Freelanders built between 2007 and 2012. First is to apply a software update as this has fixed some cases of eratic fuel gauge. If that doesn't work the fix is to replace the wiring, its a big job as the tank has to come out. The issue is diesel gets in wiring connections and corrodes the joints inside the tank. Sorry to reopen this but I have just had the same thing happen on my late 2010 GS. Range went from 100miles and 1/4 tank to 0 with light then jumped back up, light off. Did this 4 times. Only had the car about 6 weeks and has LR extended warranty. Has anyone had this issue fixed under warranty?

Thanks, that's a useful read. One question though - if I bought a car only a couple of months ago, should all the software he up to date? Or do they only update it if there a problem with that specific car? I would be annoyed if I had to pay for an update before they'd carry out a warranty hardware repair when it was a known issue.

I've never had a service at a main dealer but I've read that during a service the software is updated if needed. I don't know if anyone can confirm this? I would have though stuff like that is part of buying an approved LR car. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
