True enough though, it took 'Great Britain' long enough to realise it as we were losing the Empire, now Americans need to climb down off their high horse and accept that they don't rule the world any more either.

Allow a Yank to chime in...

My reaction to the opening statement on the first post is quite simple:
"No sh&t."

The problem is that my nation's citizenry is taught from the earliest stages of schooling that the USA IS, in fact, the greatest nation on Earth. Throughout our schooling, that fact is never questioned and it's not until university that many students start to get the tiniest of inklings that they need to expand their myopic view or the world and see that there are other cultures, traditions, and ideologies.

The scary thing is that an advanced level of education is sneered at in many parts of the country. Rural parts of this nation will forever be locked in the narrow view that every other country should be submissive to the Majesty that is the USA. So much of this country IS rural and those areas are forever cemented into a concrete belief of God and Country, and when you tie religion so closely to national pride, what do you get? Yeah... some scary sh*t.

Personally, I feel that the ideals that my country were founded upon are of the highest order. Freedom, Liberty, etc - fantastic things. They are an ideal to strive for and the world had never seen a nation who codified those ideals in the birth of their government... of course, those are just ideals, and very few of my fellow countrymen spend the time, money, and thought on what that means, what our responsibilities are to ourselves and to other nations with which we deal. Too many of us our blinded by pride and nationalism.

Here's the real kicker, the thing that bothers me the most: People in my nation that say such things - that we aren't living up to our own ideals - are often criticized for being unamerican, "liberal," and "communists." Shows like this are loved by "the intellectuals" and "the scholars," and those names are said with a sneer and contemptuous tone. Too many of us worship those that deride education and critical thinking... it's a sad thing.

The transparency of your perspective is profound and rare, but above all courageous as it would be for anyone to take a truly critical look at their own nation's inherent fault lines. Team GB is just the same. We can only hope that future generations of all nations do not repeat the current myopic triumphalism, tribalism and theological bias that sustains such tunnel vision, and sadly which exists across the whole of this planet.

nothing wrong with being proud of your country etc, nothing worse than going to work everyday thinking that someone in ' umpalumpa land' is earning more than you for less hours, and has a better lifestyle, house, car, wife and so on.
having some berk decide on your behalf that the grass is greener elsewere is just nonsense. I for one would be quite capable of killing said grass if I did happen to move there, or some muppet would park a caravan right in the middle of it Rolling Eyes

everyone gets along in there own way the 'best country' in the world is unquantifiable although as far as parts of the world go Yorkshire is up there. chosen by none other than god Thumbs Up At work

What really chaffs my butt is people in the Southern US (from Virginia down to Florida and across to Louisianan), who still wave and fly the Confederate flag from the US Civil War, but that's a whole other story...

Over 40yrs ago I met on a train in Greece a fellow traveller named Ed from Kernersville NC and he said to me: "that sometimes when I still see all this division between the grey and the blue that probably it wouldn't be a bad idea if the Brits "retook" the US - then we'd have a single clearly defined entity to heap all our troubles on instead of all folks looking for every excuse under the sun." I replied that if he knew the full extent of our own divisions in the UK he'd not accept such an invitation to sit at the devils table.

It seems humans actually need a Them in order to have an Us. One day, maybe, we'll grow up and push past that need. A perfect example is the attitude that was palpable in the US following the 9/11 attacks. Everyone in the US was nicer to everyone else for a few months. The fact that people being nice constantly was odd is, in itself, sad.
