Is it dodgy to have a puncture repair done so close to the tyre wall?

Yes, it's dodgy. These are the standards we work to.

I use a local one man band tyre specialist. He is not trying to make commission on selling a new tyre. He tells me that most tyre repairers glue a patch / mushroom and that's it hence they are not suited to an 'edge' repair . My mans technique is to grind a skim off the inside of the tyre around the puncture hole to expose clean rubber (as opposed to the shiny skin from the mould process), he then will vulcanise a patch and its clamped for the 'setting time'

Yeah, any tyres we can't repair get the reaming drill half a dozen times through the sidewall. There's a secondhand tyre shop near us that pays a quid for tyres with sidewall damage and spends another quid carrying out a non-vulcanised sidewall repair (sometimes using a section of sidewall from another tyre) including a bit of filler for the original hole. Thing is, these are all high speed-rated, low profile tyres that were being fitted to powerful vehicles usually driven by youngsters who liked his cheap prices for expensive tyres. I honestly don't know how he sleeps at night. Technically he is not breaking any laws. When we used to carry out MOT tests on local vehicles that had had one or more of his 'sidewall specials' fitted, we were unable to fail them so I always issued an advisory note marking it as dangerous, stating 'TYRE SIDEWALL REPAIR - ADVISE DO NOT EXEED 30mph IN THIS VEHICLE'. That caused a fair few arguments between him and his customers. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
