After first contacting the forum about my power steering issue ( whining and juddering - new pump,reservoir and fluid replaced ) i have also now noticed a drone comming from the rear whilst driving. Could this be the rear diff ?

The power steering issue and the rear diff problem were the two most common failings. looks like you have been unlucky enough to get both within a short period of time. If you work at Hailwood take a leaf out of Johnny Cash's book and "spirit" a new diff out!

Fairly sure that John was trying to cheer you up, rather than suggest you do anything illegal.

Noise could be from the rear could be tyres - uneven wear, inflation, damage etc.
Could be a wheel bearing, not uncommon.
Could be the Haldex unit.
Could be a drive shaft.
As you suggested it could also be the rear diff.

Suggest you find a mechanically inclined friend who has some familiarity of FL2s, or pay a good independent to diagnose the fault, or you could throw away a lot of money diagnosing the fault by replacing good components. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

krispy1, I notice your Freelander is a 'S' trim model - running 16" wheels and likely to be on Goodyear Wranglers? One of the few sizes for this size wheel. Are they down to less than 3-4mm? They can then tend to drone/rumble. I had the same on my previous car and when I replaced the tyres (as they were near to the limit in my mind) the droning went away.

Hi Winslet, i dont have the standard 16" s but am running on 19's - 235x55 19's . Rear tread is like new, wheels are balanced, no judder banging rattling only the drone. Big blue has never been off road & is well looked after. Hope its not the rear diff .

For the vast majority the low level diff repair to replace to bearing cures the issue. It's a job that requires specialist tools and best done by your main dealer. Get it down to them and get it diagnosed and a repair quote. If you're not happy, ask other dealers to quote.

I got a few klonks while driving, like rolling over a branch. Mostly when turning (worst to the left) but also in a straight line.
It dissapeared again but it definetely came from the left back.
I suspect diff or bearings because I noticed some extra play on that side (had the rear wheels off).

Any ideas?

Try a search for Haldex, don't want to scare you but there are a few threads where members have had a shudder, bang, crack and found to be the Haldex Unit, usually after a recent Diff repair.

Did that, but still on original diff. It kinda went away by itself after we took off the wheels to check, so I'm thinking it may have been related more to the wheels or a bearing starting to fail.

I would say "weird", but maybe it's normal... for a land rover
