I've always done this but I've never known why it worked. My friend was happy to find it worked in his Z4s roof so by the time he got to the car he didn't have to wait for the roof to fold back.

Probably something to do with the orientation of the antenna inside the fob. Pointing the fob at the car is likely to be the worst case. Holding it with the graphics pointing at the car may be better.
