Perhaps I should use neutral instead.

Not according the trip computer and rev counter. The rev counter is lower on clutch down vs neutral.

Okay on a flat road you'll lose speed but in a sufficiently high gear on a hill the fl2's weight will keep it at constant speed.

Yes, but the engine still ticks over, consuming fuel. The revs are lower with clutch down vs neutral so it seems that the idle speed is lower for clutch down.

Freewheeling down a hill with the clutch up - if the rpm is higher than at tickover there should be no fuel being delivered to the engine as the engine speed is higher than the demanded engine speed (throttle not depressed therefore tickover).

Freewheeling down a hill in gear, clutch depressed - there may be some effect as above due to drag in the system and the release mechanism takes extra strain.

Freewheeling down a hill in neutral - there will be fuel delivered to the engine to maintain tickover as the momentum of the car is only moving the car forward (or if you're unlucky backwards) not turning over the engine.

As for the trip computer. Mine has never correlated with mpg calculated by fuel filled over the last 3 years, on individual fillups or using the total consumed which will average out differences in various click levels in fuel pumps though I can get a reference by going back to the same filling station/pump.

Total distance travelled 22960 miles (It's my weekend/holiday drive Very Happy )
Total fuel used 3215.48 litres
Average MPG 32.46

Fred - 08 models are limited to Average MPG readings. It was the 2010 MY that included Average AND Instant readings.

Instant mpg readout is one of the very few things that I miss from my previous motor, a 530d BMW estate. Mind you, first thing in the morning going up the steep hill out of Perranporth with a cold engine and the golf gear in the back, maybe it's just as well that I DON'T know the exact mpg at that time! Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

I know Perranporth very very well.
I would strongly advise that you don't change to a later FL as you will need a supply of handkerchiefs to mop up your tears.
Anything with a slight gradient gives scary low instantaneous fuel MPG.

Having said that I wish we were in Cornwall with you.

Kind regards from Fred and happy hill climbing .

And thank you to Bob for clarification

Off topic but same here, many a childhood summer holiday spent down at Perranporth - seemed to take forever to get to from Birmingham, especially in a Maestro or Montego Rolling Eyes

Is that big rock / swimming pool still on the beach??? MY2010 TD4 HSE Santorini Black, 19" Alloys, Almond Leather, Lux Pack, Rear Spoiler, Adaptive Xenons

No idea what my MPG averages in the MY2013.....I drive it how I see fit on the day, and when it bongs and a fuel pump appears in the display, I fill it up again. I don't even know what the cost of Diesel is in and around Warks. anymore.....and frankly, nor do I care.

I might have a look tomorrow and see what the board computer reads, as I have never reset it since last August when I picked it up....all I know is, I wouldn't swap the car for the world right now! Very Happy Foraging near Gaydon....

You're correct in that a vehicle over running the engine, for example whilst descending a hill, uses no fuel. The ECU sees no fuel is required to maintain minimum revs, so fuelling is stopped. Compared with anywhere between 7 & 12% of fuel flow required to maintain a no load tick over.

As a further point. Free-wheeling could cost about 」100 and three points more than allowing the engine to over run... Wink

Thanks for the good wishes from folk who know Perranporth.

Fred, Chapel Rock with its swimming pool is indeed still there, although it gets a bit smaller every year with the winter storms. I don't know if it's still on youtube but if you put in Perranporth February 5th you'll see some impressive footage of the highest tidal surge of the year. Changed the look of the beach quite substantially and came very close to wiping out the Watering Hole!

Cheers. Come down and see us this summer! Life's great in the south west. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

My guess is you will be buying more tyres (or tires as you call them) due to over inflation and spending more money on your clutch than average. Worryingly while holding up HGVs who will overtake you at 1MPH (56mph limit) and looking at your consumption you are more likely to have or cause an accident.

After 6 1/2 years with my first car.

Re-Mapping - when driven normally, this will improve mpg by a few mpg. But if you map a car purely for mpg increase, your doing it for the wrong reason.

High end fuels like V-Power works 100%. My new car wasn't great on MPG, but after the first three months on constant V-Power, the mpg was creeping up and works well. MPG is better, engine is smoother and quieter. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Give the OP a break, guys. As he said...

"You may wonder why on earth I bought a FL2 if I'm so seemingly obsessed with fuel economy; why didn't I just buy a Prius? Well, I considered that, but primarily I need my car to get to work and go to my workshop - work can take me through a flood plain where I live so I wanted the comfortable wading depth, and my workshop is on a dairy farm - think mud, mud and more mud!"
