Preventative Medicine Rear Diff

I am looking to buy a FL2 in the next few months, between 2008/10 MY. I have been researching as you would expect asI have run various LR vehicles and have an insight into them, but not a FL2. My LR spares man reckons they are the most reliable of all LR products based on spares sold and drives one himself. However, he has had the rear diff fail and states this is the main issue with them. Most posts reflect an increase in noise from the pinion bearing, diff failure and an expensive repair.
My question is if I buy one is it cost effective and a long term solution to immediately have the rear diff overhauled, assuming it has not been done already. Do they use uprated bearings and parts to eliminate the problem. If so how much would it cost to overhaul the diff, if I remove it from the car and refit it myself. (I could do this part but am not confident of the overhaul part)
Thanks
Andy

I don't think it is worth doing until you get the dreaded whine. After all, it may have already been done. I fitted my own replacement diff which had been overhauled with uprated bearings. It has been fine thus far. I bought it for £375 from Hi-Range. Good service and as I say, thus far it is silent. John

hi .I would not bother" fixing some thing that's not broken" wait until it or if it needs fixing.it costs about £400-£500 for a low level diff repair .units are available on ebay£495 +p+p or independent repairs from £375 +p+p or £750 recon of your own diff and fitting.ive done 140 k in mine .the rear diff has been fine but had clutch done(duel mass flywheel) and cambelt done along with two rear mcphearson struts and usual brake pads shoes and discs all round.

Thanks for the replies, any other advice as to what to look for when buying second hand gratefully received as FL2s are new to me, hence why I have joined your forum. There is an added bonus in that SWMBO wants to keep my Disco 2, so as they say a win win Laughing
thanks again

As far as I know the 2010MY (maybe 2009 too) uses a new set of diff and haldex (gen4) that fix the problems of the earliest models.

Mine was an MY11, Diff bearings were replaced at 20k. I know of another MY11 going in next week to be done.

by the same token mines a 2008 (so earlier haldex), done 110k miles, some of which have been very hard miles Very Happy
also tow a caravan, which can't help the diff loading.

diff's as silent as the grave.

Now the MTR tyres, they are slightly noisey, and will be going back on this weekend - now as winter is over.
So after this weekend the diff would have to fall off for me to notice. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

My entered the workshop with 41 k km.
The initial diagnosis was the rear diff bearing but now appears to be the Haldex.
Confused

MY2010 GS manual. 31k miles. In for the rear diff bearings as we speak. Although the dealer rang today to delay collection as it's 'taking longer than thought'....
