New Tyres - Suspected diff bearing noise now gone.

I had been getting more worried about a very noticeable and worsening drone from the rear. Two new tyres on the rear and hey-presto, it's gone! Andy at AJS recommended General Grabber GTs and also commented that when Wranglers get worn they produce a very odd wear pattern causing the almost mechanical rumble. My Wranglers were down to the markers so were very worn ! I know it's been commented on before but the difference is quite staggering.

300 motorway mile on the Grabber GTs and it's like getting new car. My fuel consumption deteriorated slightly but I think it's down to the quietness making faster driving more enjoyable. The Grabbers at £111 each fitted incl' VAT can't be bad.

Andy did it again. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

Yes - definitely something to watch out for with Wranglers. Pity as they seem an excellent tyre otherwise. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

We had the same problem with the wranglers too when worn, a set of general grabber at's quickly sorted it Thumbs Up.

Well this thread fills me with joy as my FL has Wranglers. Only 4k on the car so far, when do they start getting noisy, below 5mm or lower...hopefully?

Thanks

Yes that's about right. They used to be better - my original MY07 ones were much quieter, but two sets of replacements both got noisy at around 4mm. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Looks like i will need advice from AJS Tyres who seem to frequent this forum.

I will be looking for all season / weather tyres including snow.

It seems to be a minefield of advice out there.

AJS are site sponsors. Contact them via a pm. They are generally highly recommended (including by me). Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I had the same with General Grabber UHPs when worn to approx 4mm - very intrusive whine I was convinced was a wheel bearing.

Four new Grabber GTs and the noise disappeared.

Any idea how much the 18" grabber GT's are on a supply only basis? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I think quite a few members are getting paranoid with suspected diff issues on this forum Whistle

Yes, it's a "mine-field" of conflicting advice out there about tyres. I trust Andy and his very capable team to give honest straightforward advice. While I was having a chat with Andy he said that these days one does not have to pay a fortune for good quality tyres; there are now lots of low cost tyres that are very good quality. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

Indeed when I approached Andy for Wintracs he managed to find me a set of DAs for an excellent price. He was also cheaper than my usual (highly valued) indy for a normal set of rubber. Just ask him for a quote! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I had wranglers on the RRS, replacing them cured a suspect rear wheel bearing failure.
the whole car was a lot quieter without them At work
