Wing Mirror Puddle Lights - Don't come on in reverse?

I noticed tonight that the puddle lights in the wing mirrors don't come on when you select reverse with the headlights on.

This is a really nice feature, and my Jag does this, but not the Freelander Sad

It's especially helpful when you're trying to reverse down a narrow driveway at night, my in-laws have such a driveway with a brick wall on one side and a 7ft high corrugated steel fence on the other with only a few inches either side of the mirrors, having just replaced the passenger side mirror & fitting some new mirror covers, the lighting would come in very handy. Wink

I had a poke around with the SDD to see if this might be an option that can be switched on, couldn't see it in the menu where you can select these sort of options; DRL's, mirrors dipping in reverse, etc...

I'd really like to have this feature, so i'm wondering how could it be done. Question

Haven't had a chance to go through the wiring diagrams for the car yet, but i'm hoping it could be as simple as linking a couple of wires.

Anybody done this before? I did something similar on my old Jag X-Type where we put in a relay to activate the powerfold mirrors when the car was locked/unlocked, it was very simple & had no side effects...

Any ideas welcome on how to do this.

Cheers! 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Never come across this before only ever seen this feature when unlocking the car.
Maybe a good excuse not to have to visit the In laws very often. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

Stop global winging.

Well i'm finally back at my PC & could have a look at the wiring diagrams...

Not as simple as I hoped, but doable nonetheless...

Here is the wiring of the drivers door mirror (passenger side is effectively the same)

Long story short, the door module gets all it's commands over the LIN network (basically a digital bus)

The only physical wiring to the "approach lights" as they are called, is between the door module and the light itself.

So...we will have to put a relay inside the door, between the door module and the light, will have to be a Normally Closed 3-pole, which would be driven from the reverse relay in the central junction box. So normal operation i.e. lights on when the vehicle is unlocked will not be affected, but when you select reverse that relay will switch and put power on the lights, without introducing power to that connection in the drivers door module.

Take power by tapping into the battery supply that goes to the door module, will be OK to feed the lights, and will have 12V from the reverse relay on that single wire we have to bring to the door.

Means a bit of cutting and splicing, and it has to be done inside the door itself, will need to feed a wire in to the door (hopefully there are one or two empty slots in the door connectors) and it has to be done twice in both front doors...

Not as simple as i'd hoped, and it means cutting wires, rather than just tapping into them, and door cards off...

I'll start collecting the bits i need...

Is it worth doing a write-up on this mod, is anyone actually interested? 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Thanks for even writing up what you've learned so far. It's not a mod for me but I'd certainly be interested in reading about it.
